Fed info purely from here...people take these issues and run with em as if they knew something beyond this 'controlled' and limited information.
I guess we could do the same thing with the rose anemones that cross a border at sea sans documents into Indonesia or the ricordea Florida via "Haiti/Dominican Republic...or is it vice-versa?
Pickin away at the easy stuff that you earn info on w/ the untalented click of a mouse is the new way to become greener than others now?
And how the hell did Ferdie get impugned in this? I know Ferdie also and then you know me...Does that then link us all?
And toward what end?

I know...issue fatigue on the real issues that don't come and go are too hard to tackle. A fish supply based on cyanide and a coral supply based on bogus science marinated in cash...producing CITIES quotas.
Both of these fundamental anomalies are missed by the USFWS because they are not so easy to act on as the 'token' stuff.
Both of these anamolies are also becoming institutional eco-crimes impicating a long list of people 'in the know'.
Like a new movie...this flavor of the month issue is a novelty...which will fade and be replaced by another. I used to think that people here responded more out of conviction and not just out of recreation. Goodness me. I think we've become a chat club.

Yes Steve- just like many have with the cyanide issue as well. If the information is attained, I do see what it matters if it came from first hand, a chit-chat over the telephone, or a few clicks of the mouse. Information is information.

You took this completely out of context. No one is giving Ferdie a black eye in this. The point was that it looks like the same guy who is buying up all of the net caught fish trying to look like he's some kind of reform champion is also smuggling in Clarions at the same time. Ironic, and sad.

If people here talk about some other issue other than cyanide use, it doesn't mean that it's out of recreation. There are other issues in this industry and the smuggling in of illegal animals is one of them. Not a huge problem IMO, but a problem none the less. And one that deserves discussion.

After so much money and alledged training...are there no others?!
What of the years of MAC efforts in the Philippines?
Their quarterly reports glow with reported successes!

This subject has nothing to do with MAC. Ferdie gets a lot of fish to Barnett- yes? Ferdie's fish are all net caught. When Ferdie's biggest supporter is caught (allegedly) smuggling fish into the US, it is just ironic. Again, this is no slight on Ferdie at all. It's a comment on the attitude of the industry's "reformers".

But Barnetts not a reformer. He's a bid-nessman.
On Segrest dime...[ ie. when working for them] he worked to usurp all the talent after our trainings. He was the only one doing it. When he split from Segrest years later, many of the better trained divers went with him. Segrest also kept some.
Instead of just relying on an exporter, the two of them have seen the benefit and wisdom of going to the field to mine talent.
I do the same. But its something that never caught on.
Bringing competing stables of divers to the South Pacific has revolutionaized collecting there. What a difference it can make to 'get to' the divers...instead of just a city bound exporter.
Instead of letting them enjoy the fruits of this kind of monopoloy...others could do likewise.
Ferdie is a commercially sponsored 'Follow-up' to field training. Wonderful! At least somebody did it right. And its something the NGOs did not do.

At the very least, I believe I know which P.A. the fish are at. If that is the case, I know that they couldn't be receiving better care.

Will they be releasing the fish back to the sea or do they need all of the fish as evidence?

I wouldn't have any idea, but I know that this aquarium does have a release program. That is, to the best of my knowledge, most focused on certain species of sharks, but may extend to other animals.

The issue for industry is this.

Whoever is responsible must be held to account and pressure placed on the authorities to set an example for all.

For its own self preservation those in the know must volunteer all the information to the authorities they have.
It is not in industry's best interest to sit on their hands or try to defend what is happened by saying the guy/gal is a good person and goes to church on Sundays.

Eric can you provide us the answers to the questions I posted earlier. Thank you.

It's in the hands of the proper authorities now. They are extremely thorough. I know this because my company's name is similar to a company that had purchased some smuggled product several years ago- before we were even in business. The authorities showed up at my extremely difficult to find facility (we don't have a physical address) to question me about it. They know what they're doing, it's being handled, and there's nothing you can do to further their work. Just sit back and let them deal with it according to US law.

I wonder what would happen if ya'll knew how many other importers in LA were also in on the deal. SDC is the only one that gets the heat for being forthright. Where is the wrath for the others?

Chris...its OK bout Waynes 'inquisition'. I see it more as the Joe Pesci character in Lethal Weapon then then a vengeful, firebreathing Spanish cardinal. Harmless really.
The 'tough' question was I believe did LA offer me some fish. No...actually.
I've seen enough in my day and now it was their turn to outshine me.
They did in fact. Their clarions have become famous. More famous in fact then the smuggled clarions of the Scripps Institution Aquarium, in the 90's.
The news, Fish and Wildlife and other powers that be were all over em for it...and the director had to resign.
Party boats have brought em in for 20 years now in bait wells.
The shippers of these ill-fated ones have had even worse luck prior. On one trip they killed all 1,000 fish they carried in their one live well.
I have 8 or 9 more stories like this....

That's typical industry forum. He (or she) who speaks the truth gets trampled. But wrath? I don't think anyone is unleashing wrath on Eric. Just pointing out the obvious. I've withstood far more wrath from people in here, and I expect Eric is strong enough to handle it.

So who are the other wholesalers that got busted? You retailers see the lists- I don't. From what I hear, Quality had the good sense not to get any. What about ERI, Underwater World, etc...?
