Maybe it is not such a good idea to "shop around" but thats what I would like to do.

I will look into Q&UW, what city are they in that way I can find contact information.

And I do agree that the suppliers we currently purchase from have wonderful stuff and it is always in good condition. We have had great success with Sea Dwelling and MSI. I was supposed to get a shipment from Pacific Aquafarms today but it seems our flight has been bumped and may not arrive until tomorrow now, or late tonight.

I know there has to be more, I just dont understand why no one would like to help. I understand your point Jenn and that may be why no one else is helping either. Maybe there is I place I can go to look for this information myself rather than someone giving out there prized wholesaler?

Once again Thanks,
Dustin

ever hear of google ?

Why must you be so prude? I was just looking for some help. I see now it is pretty much a lost cause looking for information on Reefs.org and finding people who are willing to help one another in such a task as to find some wholesalers.

Isnt it human if one does not have the answer to seek help and to speak to others about the task at hand. Why ask if no one will provide any help.

I do appreciate you advising me that I can find some info in PPN and FAMA. I have never really done much reading in PPN, although I do pick up a FAMA every onece in a while. I never thought to look there, but now I will. So thanks for that Vitz.

And I do understand the SDC and MSI have most everything I could ever want to order, but once again, I was just looking to see what else is out there.

Thanks,
Dustin

i was not trying to be rude, i was being absolutely serious

no offense, but you need to get away from the naivete'

the ornamental fish biz is one of the most competetive and cutthroat retail industries there are

it's just as cutthroat at the wholesale and supply level

just tellin ya how it is :)

I'm not Vitz... (I'm the better looking one, but he's skinnier...) but you're welcome.

Please don't perceive the guardedness of myself and others as rudeness... speaking for myself, I was simply trying to explain *why* you may not find a whole bunch of help here, and I tried to do it in a way that made sense to you. IMO it beat the heck out of "get stuffed"...

Again speaking only for myself, I tend to shop small mom and pop wholesalers with whom I've built a relationship with, but being small, they only have "so much" to go around each week, so I like to keep my secrets ;) I found that I get a fair shot at the good stuff (along with my fair share of the average stuff) with the mom and pops, versus the other places that allow cherry pickers and jobbers and anybody-with-any-kind-of-business-licence off the street, who pick the place clean before the remote customers get a shot at it. I'm a small store with small buying power, and I get more of a fair shake with my current set of suppliers than I could ever get elsewhere, competing against dot-coms, large franchises and the bigger independents. I'm sure you can understand why I'd be protective about the only little "edge" I might have?

It IS a very competitive business indeed.

Well, I do apologize for thinking that you guys were being rude. Its just that anytime someone asks for help and I am able to help them thats what I do. And you have given me information that I will find useful in the future as in looking in PPN and FAMA. Thanks Jenn

You know I tried the google thing and could not come up with much thats why I came here to Reefs.org. I hvae not been doing this very long. Only about a year and a half in the business. I am running this new store that the owner bought and I am trying to find out what else is out there. So forgive me for asking for wholesalers.
I guess in a way I can see how it is competition, but in another way I do not. Being that as far as I can tell I am not anywhere near anyone that has posted here and I could not possibly take away their business. But on the other hand if someone only has say 2 of something and I get my order in first I would be taking those 2 away from them, so in that aspect I understand.

Vitz I do appreciate you telling me how it is now I guess. I just never realized "how it is" until now.

Jenn, I do also shop "mom and pop" and I understand where you are coming from now. But when you say I may not get much help here did you mean in general or in finding wholesalers? I am hoping that you mean with this particular subject.

Dustin,
I forgot to mention Cortez Marine in San Jose. Steve only brings in netcaught fish. There is also Segrest Farms in Gibsonton, Fl. And All Seas in Miami and LA. Join AMDA and you will get all kinds of spam from wholesalers. I think the reputable part is something one needs to decide for themselves.

Dustin - the part I bolded in your first paragraph above is EXACTLY why we keep mum about our sources. Sure if you're in Timbuktoo, you aren't going to steal my customers -- it's my SUPPLY. If you want the best price on powerheads or salt - ask away - just last week I put a store in NC in touch with my sales rep for my favourite distributor - there is no competition because he's nowhere near me, and there is no shortage of salt or powerheads. However, if my wholesaler only has 2 blue tangs... my telling you about them lessens my chances of getting one or both of them when it comes time to place my order.

To answer your second paragraph/question - you will find most of us here are helpful whenever we can be, about just about any other subject.

Thanks Mitch, I will check Cortez Marine out. I knew about Seagrest and All Seas, been there a couple times to hand pick.

Well, thanks once again. I think we have beat this thread quite well, and we can leave it as is.
