I think it should be a definite requirement for posting in here. That way any n00bs to the forum know how to filter out who is talking BS and who is not. No anonymous posturing and riling-up...

Because in the rest of the world Chip, people have the right to post on bulletin boards without giving there true names.
This is freedom and domocracy.

I wasn't asking you, Wayne, because I know what your posts would be signed as :

Wayne Ryan (or whatever your last name is)
Not in the Industry at All

I've given my reasons before, but will do so again.

The import/export part of the trade is very small, very small indeed. Sometimes things need to be said, but jobs simply can't be risked. Better to allow those to speak without fear of reprisal than to force them out and possibly jeopardize jobs and/or relationships.

If you say so, but if you're not prepared to back stuff up, then maybe you shouldn't be speaking loudly in this forum.

Peace,

I can certainly see both sides of the coin here. However my biggest objection is not necessarily to one keeping one's identity private, but some seem to have alternate personalities -- multiple log-on names and the "Mr. Hyde" only comes out to stir the pot.

This may be true, but what prevents such a person from still developing alternate identities?

Chip, I still disagree.

I suppose there's nothing stopping them. That's my point. There are a few posters whose names only seem to show up periodically, to state something perhaps a bit more risqué and then they vanish back into oblivion once the hornet's nest has been whacked.

I certainly respect that some people can be much more candid if they maintain their anonymity, but at the same time, anonymous posters lose some credibility because we have no frame of reference to consider what they are offering up.

It's also a lot easier for those of you who are entrepreneurs - some posters may answer to somebody. Could be a direct employer or just a supplier/ally that they can't speak openly against without damaging their livelihood. If you're your own boss you can say whatever you want - what's the worst that'll happen?
And there would be no way to confirm anybody, really, without RDO staff going through an annoying screening process. I could be Jim Clements from Pacific Marine Imports and nobody would really know that's a BS company (If that's a real name and company I'm buying a lotto ticket right now). If Wayne were a fish catcher at PetCetera, he probably wouldn't sign that on a sig. I'm more or less done with the pet industry (for 40 years of so, anyways), but I keep my identity to myself more because I enjoy my privacy than because I fear any reprisal.

A funny thing, this internet is.

This is another point I've tried to make in the past, but nowhere nearly so succinctly.

there is also the issue of not having readers being able to make a distinction between an individual's thoughts as being their own, as opposed to being the org.'s they work for

Anyone remember the "Real Names" thread Greg Scheimer started in GRD? If not, it can be summarized by saying it was six pages long, ending up being locked, and featured appearances by "Albert Thiel" among others. You can judge which side I was on by my user name.

I was "in the business" for about a year and left to return to the "real world" working for one of the biggest companies in the world. All in the name of paying the bills, you know: actually owning a house instead of renting an appartment, selling out, afraid of risks, all that.

That being said, Mary, Steve, JT, Jenn, etc...(often to their own detriment) talk freely about their business for all to see, . Even the much-ridiculed concerned hobbiest. This violates conventional wisdom: "keep all your inner-business workings under lock and key". If people actually used their "secret identity" to whistle blow, seek advice incognito or avoid giving away employer info etc... like Seamaiden alluded to this would be understandable. It seems to me that more often, in this forum, the Aquarius and Ad Van Tages of the world sit behing their computers and take pot shots at the businesses of people who are actually trying to do something, or at least have the courage to discuss it openly.

In my opinion, if you're asking someone about their business; they have the right to ask about your business. But then again, what do I know? I'm not in the business.
