Well, it's nice to see your return (hopefully not brief?). :) I've been wondering how the lemon (car) bit turned out.

This was posted on Reefs.org:
they are not trainable. The village is in a remote part of Tonga and, like other island nations, the villagers only want to work when they want to. Usually this is when they run out of cigarettes. There is no incentive for them to work cause they are usually happy living the way they live... Dave, haven't you also spent alot of time and money trying to train Tongans?

and a link to references by an Indidividual of Mystery, claiming to know a lot about Tonga, despite never having been there.

As well as having a sig that reads "STFU" and posting links to attacks on RC starting as "environmentalist" then switching to the above posted R A C I S M.

I work with many Tongans and find this unacceptable.

So in an industry forum, where RDO members and extremely ethical wholesalers are called out and insulted by the above named Nom De Guerre of someone in this circle of people, I want to see credentials and identities of those claiming to be industry insiders and experts.

This is a unique part of this board and should be treated as such.

Part of why I switched to RC, very reluctantly from RDO, is this kind of stuff. I love RDO and believe people should be identified in this kind of scenario.

IP addy's only need to be checked if someone is banned. The above poster should be identified, if not banned.

RC bugs me with over-moderating, but compared to this?

Lets examine the reasons there are so few Tongan fish collectors? Corals and live rock are pretty easy stuff to collect when knee deep in the shallows. Fish collection is a great yardstick to gauge the drive within. There are very few if any native fish collectors in that island nation .........they have even been forced to bring in Philippine divers to make up for what the native population refuses to do ........"Work in water deeper then knee deep " ..........

The issues here (industry forum) had been quite for 3 days.
Now we have an "off topic" issue, brought up by some one who is little late to the discussion. Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

MandarinFish,

The screen name of the person that I believe you are quoting is not a secret alias. Said person goes by their initials as shown in their screen name.

However, rather than providing a name I'll allow "the real slim shady to please stand up" if they so choose.

Sincerely,
John Doe

Sally,
He was late but said what is obvious.
The only thing wrong with some of the fish collecting Tongan divers is their leadership...which comes from leaders ill equipped to teach, train, demonstrate and develop responsible employees.
This lack in leadership among the business people, especially the foreigners defines them...not Tongan people.
The sillier the newly arrived foreigner...the more he seeks out the same old characters who worked for so and so...or so and so. Then what we have, is the old wiley diver TEACHING the businessman how it goes.
[ just like poor divers in the Philippines teaching the MAC 'field guys' how things work]
When that diver or his posse fool the foreigner and get themselves RELIED UPON to carry the enterprise...the honeymoon ends as these divers milk the foreigner for what hes worth.
Training good , NON DRINKING guys to dive? Hows the foreigner going to do that if he can't dive himself? If counting money is all the talent he has...it doesn't help much.
Understand this...the parade of Pa'alangis ie. [outsiders] that seek gold in Tonga have been observed for a few decades now. Their inability to understand that they are not in Kansas anymore is hilarious!
They are like foreign NGOs that keep all the money to themselves and wonder why the local is not more 'motivated' to serve in their campaign.
I hear retailers lament the lack of good help all the time in this country. You mean its hard to get good fish and coral people for under $10. bucks an hour? Aaawwww!
A boss chooses his team. Choose wisely and teach and train them well earns you the reward. Choose the local 'ya-hoos' and 'kava club' that even locals don't take seriously and you get what you get.
Race? Nationality? Please. What white folks are still so out of it as to pull that lame, discredited dogma to explain a failure of theirs?

To clarify the original topic, we have no way of verifying who people are. I don't have the time to snoop and verify everyone's identities in the first place, so we just leave it up to the users to determine. Bottom line, feel free to take the words of anyone hiding behind an alias with however much salt you choose. ;)

But no more than would give you a density of, say, 1.030. Right? :D

And even if you had time you wouldn't have the resources to track down anyone who really wanted to hide.

And thats my issue with the whole thing... - Proponents of it while meaning well are simply fighting the same battle the RIAA is.. - If someone wants to pirate something they will, if someone wants to stay hidden they will... Placing hurdles simply will not stop them.

Though (as has been pointed out time and time again) my opinion counts for freakin {squat} here, what I'd like to see is an end to the childish snipping. Creative and potentially positive discussions are hit or miss but the one constant you can count on here is ****. - **** **** ****.

Bah! - Back to the sump w/ me... Unbelievable that it seems more "tame" there lately! 8O

It's about correctly identifying oneself, specifically in this forum.

If some, like "JT" are going to attack others who have public identities and businesses, then they need to be identified.

This is a small community. They need to be held accountable for their words.

Steve runs Cortez Marine. Gresham works for Cortez Marine.

Eddie runs Tropical Paradise.

Who are the critics, exactly? Who do they work for and represent? This is not P-to-P technology, this is a board. Moderators have absolute control.

Or should.

We have control of the topics. I cannot control the identities of anyone. No one is allowed to make personal attacks, monikered or otherwise.

MandarinFish,

I respectfully disagree with your original premise that JT made critism without revealing who he was. Shoot, a quick search on his screen name and you find out a lot about him, including his picture. If he had wanted to make secretive accusations he could have created another account not using his initials that's for certain. I agree that the acusational tone was probably inappropriate, but the jist of his original questions (regarding collection areas and specimen size) seemed appropriate.

JT not providing who he works for etc. within the individual posting body seems perfectly fair if what he was presenting were his views and not the views of his employer.

The bottom line is JT didn't hide his identity as he could have.

Sincerely,

JT wouldn't respond to questions on the RC forum when everyone was asking who he is and who he works for.

What about his racist remarks here? Are those within the user agreement?

Then I would suggest you take that up at RC.

The topic was thoroughly discussed and all sides were allowed to air their opinions. It was locked when it drifted from regional collection regulations to individual business practices. I suggest you move on. The witch is dead.
