What town in Cali has that 91709 area code? Must be close enough to drive and pick up the rock from 104th St or LAX. How can a poor inland etailer compete? The profit margin is roughly equal to savings in freight. His site needs to be updated to show that the Walt Smith rock is now coming in boxes carrying the MAC certified label. MAC certifed product being used as a loss leader. If this is to be the fate of certifed product we have big problems people.

According to the USPS database Chino Hills, CA has a zip code of 91709.

A 46-52 lbs case at $112 works out to $2.15-$2.43 per pound. Pretty incredible.

Chino Hills would be at least an hour's drive away. I hear Snoop Dogg has a house there, too. :|

Guess it's over your heads. There is NO way this guy sells over a 150,000 cases of rock a year. Average of what, 45 lbs a case * 150,000 cases = 6,750,000 pounds of rock a year. Check CITES for our over all imports. Do you think it would be possiable for an etailer to sell over 6 million pounds of rock a year?

Gresh,

I know that you were inferring that in your initial post. However, I couldn't find the 'quanitity moved' item you mentioned at the link you provided, or in the related live rock pages at the website.

Were did you see that?

Ah, you didn't watch the quicktime movie on that page then. Look around at near the top of the page for the Quicktime film logo and click it.

Check out his book section, I think it $98 for Eric's first coral ID book, the old one, not the one with the anchor coral on the cover.

Ah, Gresham, the movie didn't play when I went there the first time. It is amazing that they move 3,000 boxes a week and they say that they are primarily a pond company according to their homepage.

Geeze, if these folks sell that much rock Kalk must be wrong about the hobby's impact - we must be prying up entire islands if a pond company sells that much rock. <that's a jk, Kalk>

Also, did you notice that when the guy opens the boxes of rock the inner liner bag isn't sealed? Is it typical to ship rock with an open liner bag?

The boxes we get aren't sealed. Just taped on the outside.

But wow, not only do you get rock at cost, but you get a free gidt too!

I've never seen a sealed box.

I sure haven't. Bags were always banded (metal clips or rubberband) and box was always taped. <shrug>

I've never seen one sealed either. I've also never heard of a exporter leaving corals on liverock, its a big CITES no-no. Walt might want to have a talk with this guy.

I doubt that Walt is going to say much to a customer that buys 3,000 cases of rock a month.

Yah, but US F&W might have some choice words for Walt, and you know what travels down hill :)
