As much as I loathe and detest posting in here, there really is no other place on the internet to put such information. However, this is quite interesting, and deserves to be made public.

Amblard Overseas Trading in France is applying for patents for some pretty everyday techniques that have been used in this industry for years.

Patent for basic packing and acclimation (reox) of transship orders:

Patent for basic coral fragging techniques:

Patent for floating corals on styrofoam for the purpose of shipping:

For all of the information and what is being done about this ridiculous patent request, go to:

I'm going to patent the use of waterproof containers filled with saltwater to house Marine animals.

I was thinking the same thing. You can't patent how to make a cheeseburger now can you?

There's actually another patent pending that describes the acclimation process for marine ornamentals that basically uses the same ph lowering and raising that is done every day by hundreds of people/companies.

This frag patent is just another and I have to hand it to Amblard for trying to get this stuff passed.

The US Patent office has checks and balances where they research patents before approval. There is also a time frame in which anyone can notify the patent office of a non-original idea.

We actually sent a formal letter to the patent office after making numerous calls....typical runaround in the beginning where you start asking who to speak to about the matter and end up getting reffered back the first person you spoke to? Remember those phone calls?

I suggest that anyone and everyone concerned, call or write to the patent office and let your voices be heard. I doubt any of this will pass the patent office, but even if so, I doubt it would stand up if Amblard tried to enforce the patent on the industry. But who needs that hassle?

Thanks Mary for posting.

I hope this comes through clear. It from a book issued by the U.S Department of Commerce Patent and Trademark Office. There is an explanation on how to attachs the frags using epoxy putty in The Reef Aquarium Vol. I by Sprung and Delbeek published in 1994.

As poionted out by dizzy these will fail by the "prior art" section. The guy may still get the patent, but the claims will not be enforceable.
