I'm sure I've asked this question before, but I'll toss it out there again.

Does anyone distribute Berlin style sumps?

All I seem to be able to get anymore are wet/dry filters, which are fine for FO systems, but reefkeepers want and need sumps and refugiums.

I did have some nice fuge style sumps available through my regular dry goods distributor, but the distributor dumped the product line when the experienced ongoing issues with back-orders.

Seems this is the way it goes with acrylic equipment manufacturers. Many seem to come and go, many seem inconsistent and unreliable.

Anybody got any insight into where I can get refugiums and Berlin sumps?

Jenn:

Talk with Leng Sy @ EcoSystem Aquarium. He was working on some berlin style sumps last year. Not sure if he has brought them to market yet but I saw a prototype last year at SDC and it looked pretty nice. Craftsmanship was top notch with a good flow design.

My (long) past experience with EcoSystem was that they were a bit spendy.

I like Amiracle "Mudd" filters (refugium-style sumps) but my distributor dumped the product line.

I saw some nice fuges at APPMA/PIDA but from what I gather they were being produced on a small scale. I'm currently in need of about 5 of them, of varying size.

There was a company out of Texas that imports from China. They had neat little half round tanks on the corner of their booth. (Sort of like a minature versions of the awsome 200-gallon Oceanic half circle that won best new aquarium product) Anyway they had some cheap sumps I believe. Came with the overflow tube and all. All their prices were extremely competitive. Seems like TAMM had something to. I have the contact info on the boys from TX at the store if you need it. They had cheap metal halide lights too, but I don't know about the quality.

Cheap is one thing, quality is another. Taam doesn't inspire confidence in me (read: RIO). I'll check them out though, if you find the info.

I have a call in to T-Plastech (aka Amiracle), I liked their stuff, but Royal doesn't carry them anymore.

Still keeping eyes open for other options too ;)

Thanks!

Hey Jenn,

You may could try contacting some of the quality acrylic guys like George at GeosReef http://www.geosreef.com/ , or Andy at My Reef Creations http://www.myreefcreations.com/

Both very respected builders that aren't catering to the mass production avenues, so they may be open to working some quotes and designs for you and your store.

Best of luck, Bryan

I'm aquainted with Andy. He indicated to me that he's not intrested in the retail market, he sells direct. I sold a couple of his skimmers, and even had one a few years ago, but it wasn't worth my while to either pay shipping or drive to Lawrenceville to pick up (and I did the latter, it eats up a half a day, thus eating up any "profit" margin).

I'll check out the other one though, thanks.

Ahh, thats right, I forgot he was in your neck of the woods. My folks live up in Lawrenceville, hope to get up for a visit soon.

Good luck finding the sumps, we normally just do some custom partitioning in the ready made size AGA tanks to sump...but again that does eat into any margin some more...but usually still saving the customer some cash.

You could try Carlos @ Aquatic Life Systems. 352-867-1513. He is in Ocala Fl. I have sold his sumps for years and never had any problems. He also sells skimmers and reactors and does a nice job on acrylic tanks. He is a little slow some times but otherwise has a nice product at a reasonable price.

THAT is who I saw in Orlando!!! Thanks! I had his info in the stacks of stuff I brought home from the show and have yet to sift through. I was very impressed with his refugium style sump, ample room for a quality skimmer - he made some styled similarly to the Euro-reef but could fit a Euro-reef or comparable skimmer as well. Very attractive, nicely made.

Cheers!

Carlos was at the Carib-Sea booth. His sump was very nice.

The company that dizzy mentioned was Aqua logics. They are sold out of most of their small tanks, but should have the sumps. They are out of Houston, TX, and their website is www.aqlogics.com

I've got some Pacific Coast skimmers that one of my vendors "insisted" that I buy some time ago. A few have commented that they look like the new Coralife ones - so I don't know if they are from the same point of origin or not.

I have a hard time "selling" something I haven't tried, so I still have 2 of these skimmers, in 2 different sizes. I sold a smaller one some time ago but never got any feedback either way. I guess no news is good news ;)

I'm in the same boat. I ordered a few to try to get a fell for them. I'm sure there are better skuimmers out there, byut you can't beat the convenience of being able to order tanks skimmers anmd light sall from the same place. Especially if you get terms and a discount. ;)

I'd be tickled pink if it's just decent. :)

The ALS stuff is nice and Carlos is a good guy. I'd give him a call . I've carried his stuff for years and have been very happy with it. He'll also do custom stuff/alterations for you. He makes nice aquariums as well. The Coralife skimmer is basicly the same as the PCI skimmer which is some repackaged Italian brand as I've been told. RC has a pretty long thread on the Coralife skimmer and it looks like it is the flavor of the month. People seem to be happy with them. I've got 'em as well and have not put one in use as of yet.

I've sold quite a few of them, with no complaints from anyone. They seem to be a nice skimmer. Here's a pic of one in action.

Good to hear. I'm going to try one on our live rock tanks and see what happens. If it is a decent skimmer, it's about time.

It's a decent skimmer. I think you'll like it. It's not a top of the line skimmer, but not all my customers can afford top of the line skimmers. IMO it's a good skimmer at a very reasonable price.
