Just got this one.

Wholesalers list

Hi Rob,

I came across a post regarding wholesalers and saw you on there. I was wondering if you would let me in on the wholesalers address and information. I have a business license and want to stock my personal tank.

Thanks,
Steve

If I hadn't received similar PMs or emails like that in the past, I wouldn't believe it.

Sadly, I have.

I've had local startup maintenance companies ask me for my maintenance contract also, so they can use it. Now I've shared that info in the past with others far away from me (read: they aren't out to steal business from me) but somebody in my own back yard wants to use my own material to try to steal business from me  Needless to say I didn't provide them with my contract.

jenn,
you should've though.

but juuuust slightly changed so that your service is inherently better. muahahahahaha!

Yeah and eliminated some of the "CYA" stuff...

Unfortunately I'm not inherently evil enough to have thought of that....

i agree that it is a pretty low thing to ask for but shouldn't a pm stay private? i think paraphrasing what was said would be ok but i like to think the person i send a pm to would keep it that way. just my opinion.(by the way, i didn't send that pm)!

We discussed PM etiquette in another thread - I always assume that "private" stuff won't stay private - so I am careful with my wording :)

No last names were used or screen names - so is it really a breach of privacy? There must be 100 "Steves" on this forum.

At least "steve" didn't ask to you place his wholesale order for him and let him pick it up at your place

Coming back out of lurk mode. Someone elevated me from Uncle JT to Reverend JT status in a PM so I came up with a new sig.

I get PM's, emails, and PHONE CALLS like this all the time. A recent call:

me: Hello, Imagine Ocean.
him: Where do ya'll get your fish from?
me: Umm, mind if I ask why you are asking?
him: I'm opening a Pet Store and saw your website, you've got good fish.
me: Well, I don't usually devulge my sources for stuff like this. Where are you calling from?
him: New York City
me: Well, most of my fish come from wholesalers in Los Angeles.
him: Uhh-huh
me: I'm not willing to name my sources, this is about as much help as I can be.
him: Oh, whatever. I'll remember this next time.

Watch out, man...he's from New York City. He's got trunk space reserved for your trip to the bottom of the Hudson. ;)

I'm not worried, he sounded more like a transplant from here in Georgia the way he was talking on the phone.

I also have big Tony down here for protection, good customer who owns a famous pizza joint here in da ATL.. he brings me free Calzones and pizza-pies frequently and paid for his 120Gal upgrade in cash.

I also like the local wannabes who wander in and drop wholesaler names... they've obviously either worked someplace scrubbing algae or they've peeked at somebody's invoices so they think they are all impressive and fish for info to see if we buy fish from *R* or *D* or whomever. I haven't actually had anybody drop the name of the place(s) that I deal with - but then most are off the beaten path. And anyone who's astute can see boxes from one or two of my suppliers, clearly labeled with their names.

I also laughed a few times at the airport, when one of the Delta counter guys asked me if I knew a particular individual from another shop. I replied in the affirmative - and the Delta dude informed me that this individual had quizzed him about where my shipments were coming from... he was fishing to find out who my suppliers were. At that time we were both using one of the same suppliers, so the next time I spoke with that supplier, I asked them to say "HI" to that other LFS owner for me :) The Delta dude did not disclose where my shipments were coming from - he probably doesn't recall as he processes dozens of shipments anyway but he thought I should know that somebody was snooping (and I thanked him!).

Another time I was waiting for my stuff to be brought out and yet another LFS owner was parked beside me, waiting for his stuff. So he asked me where I was getting from. I can play the game, so I said, "West Coast" (hehehe) he said, "Los Angeles?" so I said, no, Oregon (which is where that particular shipment was coming from). He said, "Freshwater?"... I said, "No, saltwater." and just let him hang. He tried to crane his neck over to see the sender's name on the boxes but I just hustled them onto my truck quickly - I knew darned well what he was doing and I wasn't going to "share my gold" with him :) I suppose he thought I was dumb enough to just blurt out the name of my supplier... nuh-uh!

That's what a lot of people just getting started in this biz don't understand - even if you aren't in direct competition with me in the same city or state, it's unlikely I'm going to share my livestock "trade secrets" with anyone, because that just increases the competition among us for what we consider to be the best stuff. Took me a while to forge good relationships with suppliers I consider to be superior, and while I wish those suppliers all the prosperity in the world, I'm not going to tell others who to buy from so that I reduce my chances of getting a good fill.

Dry goods is another story - I have a great rep and I send her all the business I can - there's not much risk of a shortage of salt or powerheads, so I'll share that info with anyone and everyone who can use it - as long as they meet the criteria of the vendor - that they have a legitimate retail store front.

I read this forum quite a bit though I post to it very little but I thought I'd share my thoughts on the subject.

I will give my sources to any one that asks for them.
I understand the point of view y'all are coming from but I see it a bit differently.

I want the suppliers I deal with to be successful and one way I can help with that is to direct as much business to them as I can.

I don't worry if the store down the street knows about them. In fact,I'm all too happy to let 'em know should they ask. They will not put me out of business because they buy from the same places.

I feel that good stores are my allies and a boon to the hobby. They expose people to the hobby and help them to become successful. They increase the number of potential customers for me and everyone else. How can that be a bad thing?

Do I have some suppliers that I get great stuff from? You betcha.
Would I worry that if I gave their name out to someone else that this other person may get some of "my" cherries? Not at all.

After being in this profession for a bit I don't think there are many secret sources. In fact just by the little bit of info Jenn divulged I bet I could tell her the name of the place she buys from in Oregon ,though I've never purchased anything form them nor have I ever seen an ad from them. Of course I'll respect her wishes and not do so in public.

I'm not trying to condemn anyone's practices , just offering a different point of view.

Last time I spoke with "them", "they" didn't have a facility in Oregon anymore. Haven't bought there for months. Too bad, too.
