Just what we need, another stinkin' poll. Not like polls aren't currently running the media these days as it is.

Late Former Canadian Prime Minister John Dieffenbaker was once quoted as saying...

"Polls? Polls? Do you know what dogs do to poles?!"

Hehehehe ;)

Interesting, very interesting...actually I'm rather suprised.

Then again, I wonder how well RDO mimics otherworld reality?

So 25% start the hobby by visiting a LFS.
Now start adding to the list.

LFS sold me fluval filtration and couldn't tell me how often to change the filter.
LFS sold me mandarins when my tank was new
LFS sold me a skilter for my 250 gallon
LFS sold me 5-6 fish at the same time.
LFS sold me......please continue!!!!!!!!!!!

When you finish the list or even think about some of the possible list entries you will see how hobbyist view the 'comments' on the LFS vs. online store threads.

Doesn't your son work at a LFS?

Yes, but a first class operation. No fluvals no skilters no Moorish Idols and they would never sell mandarins to a newbie.
Great store! Super sales staff!

Naesco - You were new in this hobby one day. Could you then have been able to make the distinction between "a first class operation" and a store that sells Fluvals? Your experience today likely makes it much easier to do so now.

What I dont understand is that more then fifteen posters have stated that a fresh water tank got them to do salt. If they didnt get the fresh tank in an LFS then where? Getting a fresh water tank at the LFS then a later going back to upgrade to a salt should count as a hit in the" LFS" catagory ......not "other'?
And where is the catagory for "online etailer"

Did the guppies inform their owner that a whole new world of marine life hobby is waiting for them ? The fresh water tank did not get them into the hobby .......seeing the yellow tangs on the other side of the store , while buying tetras is how the hobbyist learned of the marine hobby. |
Putting in the catagory "other" ruins the data.

The LFS was my only vehicle for buying livestock, so yah, I owe it to them, partially. Fact of the matter is, I was working at an LFS when I got into marine, head first. I do owe Leroy some credit though :D

Fluvals are a poor choice for marine aquariums - they don't help process nitrate, and they don't permit much gas exchange, hence a sump system is better, or even a hang-on power filter. Better yet, a protein skimmer and some powerheads.

What I'd like to know is what would *prevent* a hobbyist from buying all those same substandard pieces of equipment from an etailer?

I had a customer come in the other day to inform me that the dual docs online told her a fluval would be best for her existing SW setup that has been running fine for 6 years - so naturally she bought it.

An online shopping cart doesn't ask questions.

Why is the poll closed?

I never voted in it.

It shouldn't be closed. There's been more votes recently, so I suspect something is up on your end. I'm not sure what though ;)

The server is accepting only session cookies Len... - I had to "fool" it to get in and still keep my same session info.

clkohly: you may need to copy/paste the address into the same window you are reading the thread from, not just click on the link. - You may even need to sign in again and THEN copy/paste too.
