THE MARINE ORNAMENTALS CONFERENCE saw Ruwindrijarto and Arsonetri of the Les Village netcaught co-operative present their work and it was clearly the main event and good news in the perrenial reform drama.
Les has led the way on their own and without much foreign help.
They have converted a few hundred cyanide fishers and have stuck with net catching only for 5 years now.
They have an uncompromising policy of not allowing any cyanide fish or fisherman into their ranks.
Indonesia/Bali is in fact flooded with a tradition of cyanide fishing and is now the cyanide fishing center of the world....and dirtier then the Philippines.
Everyones favorite exporters from Bali carry cyanide fish routinely and yet have hardly cared to pressure for change as they get nice corals from the same outfits.
When reefers get the small corals they love they tend to forget about coral killing poisons that ruin mother colonies [ as they call them] and mature coral stands.

When they revealed as a matter of fact that they were the only 100% netcaught operation in Bali [ true] there were murmurs in the crowd.
They have nets provided by AMDA and EASi of the Philippines and they have had the training and experience to do the job. They are now moving forward into marketing their fish.
The director of Les...Ruwi also said that they were clearly and steadfastly a non MAC enterprise. They have seen MAC from their perspective and found it irrelevant to their mission. [MAC in Bali however, wants their divers badly and there is a constant stress about this.]
They are looking for buyers of their all netcaught product and have had a hard time doing so as no wholesalers have been interested so far except for Aquatic Specialties in the SF Bay area.

Steve
PS. Luh...[pictured here]...the head of the Les village packing crew does a wonderful job w/ the handling and packing.

Welll you have the truth now.

Lobby NOW to close the border to the import of cyanide fish from Bali. Provide a special permit to Les and his gang.

I sincerely hope some US officers were present.

Well, they were there.
The USCRTF had a rep there to see it all....meet with people one on one and interview them at leisure.

Andy,
Like I wrote;
"They are looking for buyers of their all netcaught product and have had a hard time doing so as no wholesalers have been interested so far except for Aquatic Specialties in the SF Bay area. ".

Any dealer can PM me and make a commercial connection. Something we don't do online, right?

Actually Steve, considering that you're employed by ASAP (Aquatic Specialties and Pets) this is awfully close to trolling for business on-line. IMHO -Jim
ps. i think what the Les village is doing is very commendable and they desrve industry support.

Not intended to advertise Jim, just thought that ASAP was retail for some reason. Was looking for a yes/no answer. Do they have a website Steve? Nice to see some pictures and such from that area.

We've always had the truth Wayne, and the fact is, there's more then just LEs doing it right  Like you care though, you'd rather simply use the shotgun method of stopping cyanide, creating more cannon fodder then WWI! Your method would create more problems then it ever could solve. But hey, Canada is cold, why not give the villagers a cold shoulder, eh?

BTW, LES is the village, not a person ;) Ruwi is one of three directors.

The villages netcaught co-operative is the kind of initiative that eachone of us should support. I'll encourage dealers in my region to get in contact with them. How can someone get in contact with them?

The ideal situation would be that large importers buy fish directly from them, unfortunately, most of large importers have "complex" relationships with their suppliers in Philippines and Indonesia. They owe them big money and do not dare to buy fish from someone else.

They sell to other exporters as well, as most do.

What they need is bigger buyers, ones that buy across the board, not small import cherry picking outfits

They will never have all the variety of Bali Blue or Dinar as they will never shed all their values to get it.
But, as their star rises, they are linking up with fishermans associations all over the country and plugging them into their training program and netting supply to insure that the fish supply remains all netcaught.
I will go there again before too long to insure that the Sulawesi source is something we can be sure of and visit their Bangaii cardinal source.
