Hello to all
I am new to this forum, I currently live in England but will soon be moving to live in Canada, New Brunswick.
I will be looking to run a business in the aquarium industry and am trying to gather info on importing live stock and maybe dry goods also.
I know its a bit checky but i was hoping that you good folks may be able to point me in the right direction on what i need to do to enable me to import tropical marine livestock etc...
I will be looking to transport large quantitys eventually.
Any info would be great! :?:

Welcome to rdo TQ. It is mostly us Yanks posting here so we don't know much about Canadian importing. There are a couple of Canadians who post so just give it a bit.

Welcome, Tankquility ;)

I'm Canadian but unfortunately my work experience in the trade is here in the US. There are a few here on that side of the border who do post, so hopefully one or two can shed some light on that for you.

Cheers,
Jenn

Here's your biggest tip for importing into Canada. Don't move to New Brunswick! If you want to make a real go of it move to Vancouver or Toronto.

Many People in Canada Tranship from LA, but there are transhippers in Canada too. ReefRaft.ca is one, but there are a few in toronto and Vancouver.
If you want to import directly, from an exporter, you basically just have to find one that can issue CITES permits and get his lists. Look in the back of FAMA or search around on the internet, and go from there.

Goodluck.

Canada's a big country but the aquarium trade is almost non-existent outside of Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal.

The cost of living is much lower in New Brunswick. Canada's East Coast is beautiful and the people are great, but it's hard to make money doing anything out there.

In order to import into Canada, all you need is the following...

1) Master Business License ($45.00). 1-800-565-1921
2) GST Number (free). 1-800-959-5525
3) Activated Importer Number (part of your GST Number - free).
1-800-959-5525
4) Plant import permit from Agriculture Canada and phytosanitary certificate from country of origin (if importing plants - free).
5) CITES permit from country of origin (if importing coral).

Here's the Canadian government website for registering businesses etc. http://www.cbsc.org/ or 1-800-567-2345

Somepeople in Canada drive to the US and pick it up at an airport as it seems that small trucks and cars crossing to canada just get waved through

And some of those people have their shipment confiscated by USFWS! People tend to "forget" that if the shipment contains stony coral or seahorses, they need CITES documents to move the animals from the US into Canada. In SE Michigan it is not unheard of for dealers to require Canadians to pay with cash so they can plead ignorance that they are selling corals to Canadians (Duh - if they only looked at the Ontario license plates on the cars in their parking lot!)

That would be illegal contraband.
You wouldn't support the entry of illegal contraband into the US would you?

Come to think of it many people do support the entry of illegal contraband from Canabis I mean Canada.

Hey Wayne, being in BC one would think you'd be aware that a lot of the chronic is EXPORTED the same way ;)

Here's an idea - why don't you clean up BC's weed problem ... particularly the stuff grown on Crown land. You can start right away and right at home... once you've got that one under control, then come back and help us save this trade from ourselves ;)

How would you know that jingle?

Vitz don't leave. You do add to the forum and you add humour from time to time. Just understand that you and I do not share a common view of this hobby/industry and that inappropriate personal postings are not necessary to make your point.

I want to see changes long overdue and you want the status quo.
IMO change is inevitable and those who embrace reeform will be the first to benefit.

the difference between your p.o.v. and mine is that yours is borne out of total ignorance and sensationalist drivel, while mine is based on years of experience in almost all phases of this industry AND hobby, with a true concern to achieve conservationof natural resources in a practical accomplishable manner

and i am NOT a troll

imo-the only folk who should be posting in the ind forum are industry folk, with the exception of hobbyists who want to ask questions for the goal of learning the real and true picture

you are NOT such a hobbyist, and you are not involved in this industry in any way

yet you post more b.s. than kalk (sorry jeff-had to :P )-who sometimes actuyally makes some sense and intelligent posts

the very fact that you presume to know and state what i want is insulting to my intelliogence and every ind. related persona's intelligence here

you have NO idea what i know, what i do, and what i want-to state that you do is ludicrous and trollish

i'm done-no more visiting the wreck to looky-loo
