This is Exactly why you industry boys shouldn't be getting all up tight about a few divers selling to the hobbyist and a few hobbyist buying from wholesalers.

But Raskal the cat is out of the bag now. It won't be just a few hobbyists, once the rest learn they are not getting the same deal. When I first heard the wholesalers were doing this I knew it would be a Pandora's box.

The greater mass would never even think to even try to go to a wholesaler. But I do see your point, I do meet a lot of hobbyist and can say that 1/10 tells me they have frequent access to the wholesalers and 4/10 if not more has gone at least once in the past 6 months.

No offence taken :D I don’t get offended by people behind a computer screen, its too easy for people to talk out of their rear end when they are (myself included).

Well you certainly can't fault the hobbyist for wanting to save a little green. It is however a mystery as to why the wholesalers seem so intent on destroying their customer base. :?

I don't think they are destroying their customer base. There are very few retailers that will choose a wholesaler on principle - especially when that wholesaler has something they want.

Thales,
I guess you didn't understand my meaning. I believe the wholesalers are directly causing retail stores to go under by their business practices. First with the dropshipping, and now by selling direct. Retailers and their overhead cannot compete. Actually the selling direct to hobbyists has been going on for a very long time. I first learned of it back in 1995, when I was talking to a hobbyist at MACNA. It's just that a lot more people want in on it now.

Its a valid point.

Living in the short run is the hallmark of a trade that based its fish supply on poison and corrupt fisheries bureaucracies that flourished under dictatorships for 25 years.
Old habits die hard.
The old school importers played ball with this system, enjoyed the perks of it and were witting accomplices to it.
Of course they will leak fish for a dollar today and ruin tomorrow.
and they should suffer a general boycott by retailers for it.

Steve -

I agree with that. My question then is why has everyone seemed to shy away from an expose of sorts. I've heard this before but names of the guilty wholesalers remains a secret. I think the reality is that not all retailers are intimate with their wholesalers in a way as to know what they do with other customers. Some good examples of this sort of backstabbing would likely go a long way.

I think it's safer to ask, who isn't doing it? IMO fewer don't do it, then do :(

Are there even any decent retail stores left in the LA area? A hobbyist living in that area really would have to be a chump to support their local stores.

There's some simply amazing shops in LA, and a bunch of dumps :D New stores keep popping up, etail sites getting storefronts, etc. The LFS scene is pretty big down there.

I can see it being big...it's LA. The LFS and etail should be about the same pricewise...it's not like one has buying power over another. But if all the locals go to their local wholesaler (LWS), well that would suck. I think I'd be giving a lot of my business to the transhippers.

Maybe I have it all wrong though.

Well everyone in LA is rich anyway. Except for the illegals. The people in this region of the country seem more negatively affected by the rising costs of gasoline and the trickel down economics there of.

The majority of LA consumers do not get into wholesalers or wholesale pricing.

Well how pray tell, do they decide who does and who don't? What are the ground rules?

I can attest to this, when I went to Disneyland early this year I went around and found a few "Tropical Fish" stores, thinking "OH MAN! They'll probably have some great stuff..." Ugh... I went in one, the glass was so brown I could hardly see in the tanks (diatoms).. needless to say I didn't go anywhere else, my next trip down there I'll ask a few of the local clubs where the good stores are.

They must work it something like they did Studio 54, the New York Disco back in the 70s. Bouncers let in the beautiful people, (reef check party crowd types) while the nerds, geeks, snibblers, eggheads, and momma's boys get shoved back out on 104th st.

Pet stores buy from a number of wholesalers. If a wholesaler sells to the public, it makes a *big* differenc on how much the store will purchase from that wholesaler, if anything is purchased.

As pet store owners we chose how much to buy from each wholesaler. How those wholesalers coduct bussiness makes a *big* difference on how much and how often we purchase from them.
