I would never buy any fish ever from Walmart. I always see floaters in the tanks. It's depressing.

Sweet nothing like an old M.A.R.S. system to keep some fish alive  Although with enough tweaking you can make them work halfway decent.

The Wally near here just renovated in the last year or so and got all new MARS systems. I heard they were "disposing" of their fish prior to getting the new system, they weren't into moving fish from the old to the new. A client of mine works there and he was taking home as many fish as he could (he has a basement fish room) and I gather the rest were thrown away - that's deplorable to begin with.

Now a year after getting new fish and a new system, they're getting rid of them. That suits me just fine - I can't tell you how many people find me after a big wipe out from a Wally World fish. Shame they spent all that money on new systems, just to get rid of 'em.

Between that and another local full line store closing recently, my own FW sales are actually up a bit. I didn't sell FW when I first opened, but about 3 years ago when I expanded I put in FW but scaled it back a bit last year because it wasn't the "best use" of that tank space, and I converted 450 gallons of it to saltwater.

Now I've been seeing more freshwater sales in the last couple of weeks.... hmmm... I don't know if our Wally has emptied their tanks yet - but I am interested in the increase in my own FW sales - perhaps this is a good thing for me :) I know it's a good thing for the fish...

Well I went by the local Wally yesterday and they still have a very, very overstocked fish system. In fact a couple of locals were musing at the "pufferfish" they saw (they were actually black mollies, and they were pointing at one that was either very pregnant or very bloated...).

So I don't know if they are one of the ones that will keep selling fish or not - but my freshie sales are still up nonetheless.

Funny too - some of their prices were way higher than mine, some were lower. $0.28 for a feeder goldfish at Wally, $0.15 with me, and I just raised my price from a dime, because my wholesale cost went up a bit.

Go figure.

Wally has two stores here in BG. One pulled the fish and the other didn't. I'm not sure what type of logic they applied.

Selling "feeder" fish = OK (to make profit)

Disposing of fish = Deplorable (to lose money)?

I don't have feelings one way or another about either, but it seems silly to buy into the idea that it's OK to purchase fish and sell them for the express purpose of their being eaten, and yet deplore a seller who disposes of fish for their own purposes?

Nanocat, I see your point - but it's one thing to keep it in the "circle of life" and it's wasteful to just flush something for the sake of not being bothered to deal with it another way.

I don't care for damselfish but I've got 4 in the shop now that people wanted to be rid of. I've got a huge Pacu and an Oscar too... although they'd have clogged the toilet.

I'm not big on feeders used as feeders, for what it's worth - better for the fish that's eating the food to get a balanced diet. Most of my "feeders" (when I have them) are used to get outdoor ponds going - people don't want to drop $20 or more on a Koi as a test subject.

All life has value - IMO it's a waste to flush something "just because" but it's somehow OK to me if it's one creature being fed to another.

Heck, I'm not a vegan... so I can't exactly point fingers in that regard. I belong to the "other" PETA... "People Eating Tasty Animals"... (but not feeder fish!!)

I always felt a little guilty when I brought home sushi and ate in front of the reef tank 8O

LOL I don't! I'll eat a fish sandwich in the store and show it to the grouper in the 1000g and say fiendishly, "You could be NEXT...muhahahahaha"

Then I take my medication and it's all better
