Accomplishments for Fiscal Year Ending December 31, 2005
1. Numerous harvest areas, collectors' cooperatives and exporters in the Philippines, Indonesia and Fiji are certified - with scientific surveys and multi-stakeholder management in place for 28,226 ha of reefs, 305 fishers certified, over 1,080 community stakeholders that have participated in training, and 19 certified exporters. Reef destruction and fish mortality have been reduced in certified areas and sustainable catch levels are in place. Product quality and collector?s incomes have improved, with fewer fishing accidents due to unsafe diving practices.
2. A cumulative total of 22 importers and retailers in the US, Netherlands, France, Germany, the UK, Canada, and Singapore are MAC Certified. Demand to participate in MAC Certification is rising, with over 150 companies (and counting) from 21 countries making public commitments to seek MAC Certification
3. Awareness of the issues and the value of MAC Certification is growing, with 54 articles in trade and hobbyist magazines in 15 countries in 2005 alone, and over 5,000 stakeholders from over 60 countries in the MAC Network
Objectives for Fiscal Year Beginning January 1, 2006
1. Increase the number of MAC Certified collection areas and collectors groups.
2. Increase the quality, consistency, volume and variety of MAC Certified marine ornamentals reaching market.
3. Work with exporters, importers and retailers to become MAC Certified; and with consumers and other stakeholders to participate in transforming the global marine aquarium trade to sustainability.
