Anyone know anything about the rumor of the US locking out any non CITES nation from shipping CITES items to the US?

Well at least you now know where this:
Bob do you still have permits to bring in live rock from Haiti/DR? There is a rumor it has been shut down.
Thanks,
Mitch

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.. hence me posting about haiti & live rock. I can think of a couple of people that will be really upset about tonga too if that happens.

Joe,

Very interesting document. How do us regular folks get access to info like that? This will really put a crimp on my plans to import deepwater Med corals from my shipper based in the Holy See...

US F & W S Jay. Wouldn't the AZA inform you of such things or is that not something the deal with?

Jeremy this already did happen. Shipments of CITES listed animals from all of the countries on the list have been stopped.
It is my understanding that most of those countries at one time met the requirements stated in the announcement, they just aren't up to date with their paperwork. That may be over simplified, but its the jist of the situation. If thats the case I think that most of the countries will be back up and shipping pretty quick.

Gresham,

Yes, the AZA has a very active Governemnt Affairs office. It takes varying amounts of time for this sort of information to filter through to us, so I was looking more for a direct access to USFWS for similar notifications such as this.
That said, I've never heard of any AZA facility making a direct import of aquatics from any of those areas (I was joking about that in my post) - and as a result of captive breeding, AZA facilities rarely, if ever need to make importations of mammals, birds and herps....so this one is really a non-issue for us, but who knows about the next edict?
For example, USDA APHIS just changed the requirements for housing a species of tropical ant. I learned of it because I just processed a permit for the species, but other people holding that species probably won't learn about the change until their permits come up for renewal - so I posted a note about it on our terrestrial arthropod server - I just wish there was a more streamlined flow of info, that's all.

No reason for an Australian shipment to be delayed by this. Australia is not one of the listed countries. Shipments coming from countries with their paperwork up to date are arriving with no problems.

One of the problems with Tonga is that there have been shipments arriving here with re-export cites listing Tonga as the country of origin and the shipments have contained corals not found in Tonga. Officials are probably having a hard time figuring out if Tonga really issued permits for those species or if the paper trail switch happened in the re-export country if Tonga is not current with the paperwork.

Maybe your Aussie shipment was relying on some paperwork from Tonga?? I don't know why else it would be held up for this.
