Hello folks,
We have something of a phenom evolving here....perhaps the first, professional female fish collector in the South Pacific/S.E.Asian theater.
But, the story will have to wait awhile longer and will be featured in the coming website on the group conducting the trainings.

Here is a picture of a female collector in Tahiti. Moea is her name. She specializes in Mustard tangs, and if you have ever caught them you know what work that is. She does other tangs and odds and ends also. She leaves the easy stuff like flame hawks and lemon peels to the guys.

I will try and find some pictures of the ladies that collect in Solomons. There are several ladies that collect part time but we have 5 or so that are full time and often out collect the men.

Dave

P.S. Moea's income comes totally from collecting fish, she is not a part timer.

Yes, catching mustard tangs is a full body workout! Like being in a washing machine with the door shut and the lights out. I'll respect that any day.

Had a storm just blown past? - Was there a grounding at the site?

Just curious because the vis looks like **** and rock heads seem fairly interspersed.

As-is it doesn't look like a very feed-rich area for a mustard tang but wtf do I know, what little sub-surface fishing I've done amounts to a couple hours of spear poling for queen triggers in the Bahamas. :? - Still enough to have a healthy level of respect for free diving collectors, for sure..

Anyway, sorry if my OT question is too noobish for a real answer.

I think that she was after a small Sufflamen Bursa in the first pic above. Here is a picture of the fish. The second pic she has a juv. orange shoulder tang. The mustard tangs are caught in the surge zone, no way that I could take a picture there. I came out of the mustard tang collecting experience bloody, collecting mustard tangs is a full body sport, be ready to be slammed around.

My photo resizing is not working out too well. Also got the pics switched in order but you get the idea.

you can find orangeshoulders in a variety of areas not just surge zones. We fish em in 35 to 45 feet , they travel in schools when they are juveniles and adults and they can be cracked in large numbers if you have the proper gear and are wise to their tactics.

Looks like she is on snorkel which means she is limited to that area which would be very difficult.

Tropic,

I think that you mis-understood or read the post wrong. It is Mustard tangs that I said lived in the surge zone, not orange shoulders. As you can see from the picture she is not in the surge zone collecting that orange shoulder. It would be quite difficult to take a photo of collecting Mustard tangs as you get knocked around a buch and would probably damage the camera.

I may be wrong and if I am Dave will surely correct me (please do Dave) but I thought SI was snorkel only? Or is it just the hooka is banned there?
