Living in SoCal, the majority of my familiarity with the marine aquarium industry is based on Indo-Pacific animals and the Ido-Pacific trade. I'm now working on a piece about the western Atlantic side of the industry. If someone (or someones) would clue me into the major players and issues, I'd appreciate it very much.

Thanks.

Thanks so much guys. I'm in touch with Bob.

If anyone wants to add their two cents here, these are questions of of which I am working:

1. How does the collection of western Atlantic animals differ from Indo-Pacific animals?

2. At present, where are most of the fishes collected? By whom?

3. What are the differences between collecting western Atlantic livestock in U.S. waters versus non-U.S. waters?

4. What western Atlantic animals represent the bulk of the wild caught animals in the trade?

5. What are the biggest issues facing western Atlantic collection?

I'll give a little stab at #4. If I was guessing, which I am, I'd say more Royal Gramma are sold than any other Western Atlantic fish. Also popular are Pearly and Yellowhead Jawfish, Blackcap basslets less frequently and Queen, French, Rock Beauty, and Pygmy angles. Also some plain looking wrasses like Slippery Dick  Lots of peppermint shrimp, snails, hermit crabs, brittle and serpent stars, and emerald crabs. A lot of the Atlantic stuff is less corolful than Indo-Pacific and doesn't sell well. And don't forget the spiney box and porcupine puffers. Swissguards are a nice fish but a little pricey for most folks.

If you are going buy the unit, hermits/snails/shrimp IMO are sold in far larger volumes then any fish collected there.

The Western Atlantic has the exact same issues as the Indo-Pacific, minus the cyanide

What is Quin?

Quinaldine

A colourless liquid used to anaesthetise fish prior to examination or surgery. It is also sometimes used to catch wild fish, but may be harmful to the environment. The chemical is the condensation product of aldehyde and aniline.

I think Quin is still legal as long as you have a permit.

And quin itself isn't that harmful, now the agent used to deliver it can be though.

Chris, we're the only country on the planet to give permits for it's use...

Does that mean no one else uses quin OR that other's use it, just unregulated?

You can get a permit for a gun also. But it doesn't mean it can not be use to commit a crime. 8O

The permit allows them to purchase and use it to collect fish. There is nothing illegal about it in Florida.

It's pretty pricy so I doubt many others use it. The US is the only one that issues permits for it. I don't know if other countries outright ban it or not.

Steve has a great picture of a certain famous East Coast collector that had a boat full of quin bottles on board. But your right, it's usually the adacemia guys that can't catch fish with out it  Have you ever seen the footage where they where using a submersible to inject a cave with a TON of quin only got one little fish? They blasted the sh** out of that cave :(

Permit or no permit, the bottom line is it's still juiced fish. 8O

Sure it was quinaldine? Normally they'd use Rotenone, since the fish wouldn't survive the trip to the surface anyways.

Although I'm not a big fan of using chemicals on fish, it's really the only way to collect specimens from a sub. The manipulator arms' dexterity isn't very good.

I know people who've used it in other countries, so I assume there are a number of places where it's legal.
