MASNA members and interested parties:

The hobbyist community has expressed a great deal of interest in the new Marine Aquarium Council (MAC) Certification process. In order to help inform the hobbyist community, John Brandt---MASNA’s Representative to MAC and the United States Coral Reef Task Force (USCRTF)---will travel to the Philippines to observe MAC Certification activities in the field.

John’s “observer mission” is sponsored by MAC and is planned for Feb. 17-21, 2003. It is scheduled to include the following:

· Visits with the first MAC Certified collectors in the community of Batasan;
· Meetings with government officials;
· Oversight of exporter activities; and
· Observation of fish collection activities.

The MASNA Board of Directors is thankful to MAC for this opportunity to keep the hobbyist community informed and involved. We are also thankful to John Brandt for taking time out of his busy schedule to make the trip (what a horrible sacrifice!).

Since John is representing MASNA and the hobbyist community, your questions and comments are especially encouraged. Please feel free to contact John Brandt directly via email at [email protected] .

Those who are not familiar with MAC are encouraged to visit their website at http://www.aquariumcouncil.org/ .

Watch upcoming MASNA newsletters for John’s insights and details of the trip!

Sincerely,
Lee Morey
