  2. blue eyed tang? need info

can anyone give me the scientific name for a blue eyed tang? I just purchased a 1.5 inch baby. Did research first but not sure I got the right name. I'm guessing at Acanthurus coeruleus. can anyone tell me if that is correct?? If you have a link or info on this guy , I would really...
  3. easy mag-12 pump question

well, this may be too, too simple but.....if you put it underwater (assuming you have one already) and plug it in you will be able to tell by the water movment. It is a powerful pump tho so you may want to try this in your garbage can full of replacement water. amber
  4. Copperbanded Butterflyfish, Reef Safe?

I have a copperbutterfly --she's been here about a year. I believe you can keep these if you are willing to feed them what they want. I feed her live bloodworms and mysis shrimp (the good kind without a lot of water and still whole--there is a lot of difference in m. shrimp). She prefers the...
  5. backflush an RO UNIT -can you explain to me

 thanks. I guess that means that the "backflush" kits I see are really "flushing" my RO membrane by pushing lots of fast water thru it??? Did I get that right? Would it be better to really backflush it and are there kits available to do that? I AM confused on this. thanks amber
  6. backflush an RO UNIT -can you explain to me

I just got a new RO unit and it is SO much easier than making distilled water! Can you explain the "backflush" process to me? I know kits are available in my catalogs. Does it push water back thru the membrane??? or does it brush off the surface of the membrane.....????? many...

  8. Hello Lights--are the PC s really actinic??

I'm running 2 actinic PC lights ( 96 watts) which I bought from Hello Lights.( and 4 10K) My friend tells me that some so-called actinic lights don't produce the 420 nm(?) light spectrum. If you have "hello lights"--are they working for you? TIA amber

  10. Filtration system for all tanks in my apartment...opinions,

just my 2 cents. If your fish only tank (for example) gets diseased, the water will be pumped into all the tanks, even your prop (frag) tank where the animals have cuts or breaks or whatever (and potentially lowered immune systems) that would attract the bacteria. amber
  11. frustrated an disgusted--algae

thanks for taking the time to reply Katspaw (do you like cats?? i do) and James. I have just started the kalkwasser in the evap. like you said. It is a DYI "NURSE" which (as best I understand) works on a vacuum. It seems to be working okay so far. amber
  12. frustrated an disgusted--algae

I'm getting pretty close to desperate again.....I can't figure out what my problem is. I NEVER had an algae problem in my 55. Upgraded to a 125 last June and it is a never ending battle. I use distilled water. It seems to grow where the water flow is best!. I use a Sea Swirl and 2 powerheads. I...
  13. Cutting the Top Brace on a 55 G

the brace actually holds the sides in. I'm surprised but I've seen it myself. Bought a used 55 with a cracked brace. Filled it up with water and scared the heck out of myself!! you need the brace. On the other hand one lfs replaced a broken brace with clear glass (about a 6" band) and it...
  14. Getting rid of red algae?

I don't know if this will help you or not...I have a red and hair problem also. I think I have addressed all the areas (caulerpa, skim, current, overfeeding etc) but there is still a little bit in there. What I wanted to tell you was that I used Erthromysin (sp?) without hurting my critters. (I...
