Hey alex:

I've decided that I should get the 6 lamp t5 tek light instead of the eight. The light will be too big for the tank. It is about 1 to 1.5 inch longer.

that is up to you, all sand will collect crap, however the smaller the grain the easier it can be cleaned by sand sifting inverts.
