  1. Any corals successfully kept with non-reef safe fish?

tex, if they are eating only one kind of coral, then if you want to keep that coral and the fish, then maybe consider caging up the coral (egg crate). I did this for my xmas worm 'rock to save it from a pesty african flameback. Would be really cool if I could find clear egg crate! hmmm...
  2. 6500 vs 10000k pictures.....

the right side is one color.. BLUE. the left has all the colors of the rainbow. Shouldn't the corals be seen for their natural color/beauty than that what we want them or tweak them into being? A lot of corals do come from deeper blue waters.. But the right side is like a techno blue/purple...
  3. Dr. Shimek..........Titanium??

maybe titanium does affect our tanks... like just maybe it is why many of us cant keep elegans alive nor goniopora? though it's obviously and probably not the case... it would be interesting if there was a connection
  4. Acquamarine refractometer

esm, With the refrac, you put the sample on the glass and close the plasitic 'top', then wait for 30-60 seconds, then read the 0/00 side or specific gravity side? Are you also saying that at 0 seconds the reading might come up as one number, but waiting the 30-60 seconds may give a...
  5. SPS question

I kept acros under 84 total watts PC in my 15 gallon reef: '15 gallon reef' . Tank is not around any longer... Just moved up in size. I had awesome polyp extention and nice color. Acros kept mid-way and above no problems. Though I tried only 3 species, pretty much randomly. All three did...
  6. I have a red goni for exactly one year

since someone replied to it anyhow.. the skeleton is exactly the same size as when I got it. (I think). I wouldnt imagine that they grow very fast once they are past the 'juvenile' stage. I've only seen very few 'big' gonipora.
  7. I have a red goni for exactly one year

I thought I deleted my post (well made it blank; apparently it didnt work). It was meant for reply to a different post. Disregard it please.. thanx!
  8. I have a red goni for exactly one year

In a very heavily skimmed tank (38 gallons with a EV-150). Stong lighting, 400 watt halide 6500k, and actinic. It is directly under the halide, though 12" under water surface. Medium-strong water flow with wave maker. It's receded when I moved a few months ago. Though it's regrown over the...
  9. purple-tipped elegans and lighting

I know I'm asking a lot of elegans questions lately... To those of you with success (it opens nicely, etc) keeping the purple-tipped (for more than say 2-3 months). What combo of lighting does it get? *Halide? wattage and color temp *NO, HO, VHO? actinic , regular daylight white...
  10. C. Jardeni (sp?) - elegans: If yours croaked, how long did

I have a green with pink tips and green with purple tips. The green is doing pretty nicely on bottom of my tank , pretty much directly below my 400 watt 6500k halide with vho actinics. My purple tip was 2 1/2 weeks old and slowly opening more and more under 'filtered' lighting (filtered from...

  12. Are sea stars (star 'fish) eating my seri (bird's nest)?!

I think I can answer my own question. YES THEY ARE! . I pulled the sea star that was just on the coral, and found a few straglling polyps, like mini-RTN (but not quite like it). I'm sure the star was munching down. HOW DO I GET RID OF THESE F***RS? Without chemicals, though. I dont...
  13. Are sea stars (star 'fish) eating my seri (bird's nest)?!

I dont have a pic of the stars... But they are little bitties. They are off-white on their underside, and greyish on their top side. They are often on the glass. Some seem to have a complete array of arms (none missing) with 5 arms, some 6, some 7. I'm quite sure they are all the same species...
  14. Are Strontium, Molybdenum, or Potassium removed with protein

Which, if any, of those elements (the ingredients provided with Kent's Strontium/Molybdenum supp.) are skimmed off, especially with heavy skimming? I think I recall that the ingredients of Thiel's KSM are skimmed off. The only difference between the two brands of supplements (Kent's and...
