IMO the Prizim skimmer is a great skimmer for your set up . I personally have on on a 30 long tank with a decnt bio-load on it. If i was you i would go with a better light arangement. Two (6-watt PC's would work good for leathers and mushrooms and the such.

It should be perfectly fine just r8inse it off good. You can use anything from PVC pipe to concrete for base rock.
