  1. problem algae taking over tank

Can anyone help ID this algae and offer removal tips, its starting to take over my tank. My lights are down to 5 hours but its not helping.
  2. ID on brown slug with a red dot??

I seem to have a herd of these tiny brown slug like creatures on my glass. Any ideas? They only seem to be interested in algae (at the moment). I'm keeping a close eye on my corals just in case. Could they be baby versions of two larger slugs I have in my tank? Sorry no pic at the moment. I saw...
  3. Hard coral?

Here's a better photo, I moved the coral closer to the front of the tank, the polyps are not quite fully extended in this picture but they dont get much bigger. They stem from a hard white dome shaped base which can be seen in the photo. Hopefully this will help with the ID.
  4. Hard coral?

I found this hiding under a coral polyp colony frag I recently obtained. At first I thought it was a snail and pulled it out the tank only to reveal a hard white lump stuck on the rock. I cut the rock and placed it at the top of my tank and now its displaying small brown polyps. Apologies about...
  5. dark red coating on reef base

ORP? What's this? Doing a 10% change now.
  6. dark red coating on reef base

I have a dark red coating on my reef base (2" deep 'red sea' Aragonite) that has just appeared over the last few days. My tank is 2 months old and is stocked with 1 fish, two peppermints and 3 scarlet hermit crabs. Is this something to worry about.
  7. Help with limp leather finger frag

I have been given a frag of a leather finger. it's fairly large cutting (around 3" sq. It came from a monster of a coral that was doing very well. I have banded this frag onto a piece of LR but it's not looking good. The fingers seem very limp and are hanging over the edge of the rock. It still...
  8. Filter needed

See attached pic re. the rear chamber. I hope this helps. I don't have any LR rubble. The sponge filter is a tight fit in the chamber and has a hole cut out of it so that it can sit over the UV. The filter rests on top of the pump.
  9. Filter needed

Lawdawg I think I'm getting it but... You say change the pad, I don't think I explained my set up very well. I have a rear compartment in the tank that is split into 4 chambers: Chamber 1 - UV light, pump, sponge filter approx 2" sq x 5" long Chamber 2 - Skimmer - powered by pump in chamber...
  10. Filter needed

OK I'm not getting this, apologies for my stupidity. I think I have the following options. 1. Just dump the filter 2. Dump the filter and add lights to aid algae growth. There is already a UV light in this chamber of my tank, will this do? 3. Keep the filter and dont clean it (ever?) 4...
  11. Filter needed

Thanks for all the advice, being a newbie sucks! How about keeping the filter and cleaning it in water I remove from the tank during water changes. Would this be a good idea?
  12. Hitchhiker

I agree that it's not aiptaisa, I have had these in my tank and this is completely different. From all the majano pictures I have looked at they appear to have bulbous (is that even a word?) tenticles? The anemone does have a trunk but it's much wider than Aiptaisa. Its also bright green in...
  13. Filter needed

So... as I have 12lbs of LR I dont need a filter?
  14. Filter needed

I'm running a 12g tank with 13lb LR and a skimmer. The tank came with bio balls, ceramic rings and a foam filter which sits above a 10gph powerhead - the powerhead feeds the skimmer. I also have an additional 15gph pump which is connected to a flo divertor. All this sits in a rear compartment on...
  15. Lazy scarlet hermit crab

I'm fairly sure it was, his claws were still red and one dopped off when I picked up the shell, his 'face' had lost its color.
