Yep that is it. The weirdest thing is that there are 2 different colonies (not from the same source) in 2 different tanks. The temp point is a good one. I had only been focused on the water quality, but I'm also having a SMALL increase in temp.

Biggest factors IMHO: 1. CA and Alk Levels (you would do better with higher #s) 2. Overall water quality (no tap water) 3. Lighting (more is better, but you can have too much) 4. Flow (more is better)

Okay this is odd. I have a bunch of SPS in 2 different tanks. One tank is a 3 yr old 150h with 660w of VHO and 192w of PC Kalk reactor big skimmer and fuge. Nitrates run between 0 and 2. Mixed reef with many softies and LPS. 10x flow through sump, 7x in tank. Bulbs are about a year old...

I also run an inverter, much cheaper and in most cases easier than a generator.

if the stand pipe headed to the sump is taller than the intake to the closed loop (which it must be to avoic bubbles in the loop) there shouldnt be a problem.... right?

I think they are all 110w.... is is the same ballasts driving them, so the output should be the same either way, but I think they are all stated at 110. Since only coral life makes them in 46.5, and those bulbs are a little different in to the eye, (though they claim to be 10k, 03 and 50/50)...

Sorry, by "regular" I was talking about 48inch bulbs. Yes I have VHO ballasts. The 48s where much whiter, these have a more pinkish color.

I think many people assume something "killed" the fish when the vast majority of the time it is stress, water quality or some other natural cause. I care for 18 tanks, most have MJ1200s on them and I dont think one has ever killed a fish. Especally in a new tank and with a new fish. My point...

I am sorry to hear that. It is hard to believe that a healthy fish got stuck on a MJ 1200 like that. If the screen guard was on the MJ I'd lower the probablity to nill.... unless he was tinie tiny. My guess is that he died of some other cause, and floated into the pump.
