  1. FS: used 4x55 PC retrofit

Giving this one a bump. If it's not sold by this weekend, it's off to the scrap heap. -Hans
  2. FS: used 4x55 PC retrofit

Took this out recently when I upgraded to LED's. Its a AH Supply 4x55w retrofit bright kit, but with no bulbs. Nothing too fancy. Pair of workhorse 5 ballasts, 22" reflectors (4 of them), endcaps, wiring and clips. Looking for $50 shipped, $40 in person. Located in the Islip area...
  3. Banking Soda to raise alk

I use sodium bicarbonate a couple times a week as my ALK supplement. It doesn't take much, and you need to add it slowly. It's what BRS uses in their Recipe 2 for their bulk 2-part, pretty common really. As mentioned, just make sure that the ingredients on the box only says Sodium...
  4. When choosing LR, what do you look for?

If it's got a lot of algae on it, keep on walkin. Otherwise you'll just enjoy fighting it in your own tank. -Hans
  5. Help!!! All the fish are dying!!!

Went back to post #1 and had something odd pop out. You said this was set up as a freshwater tank first, that you converted over, and the way it reads you left about 20 gallons of old freshwater in there? That would likely mean it was the nasty sludgy water left over after you pulled the...
  6. Marineland Reef Capable lighting?

Looked at them for a short time, wasn't impressed. Nowhere near enough output coming from those units. You can get a lot more powerful LED setup for that price. Ended up going with a MaxSpect unit instead, and have been totally happy. -Hans
  7. WTB: Mag Flake

Anybody in the Islip area have any bulk Mag Flake, or spotted any recently? -Hans
  8. Anyone try BRS' reef saver eco rock?

I've actually got a 50lb box from reefcleaners enroute to me. I've used them in the past for various macroalgae's and such, always been top-notch. Someday I'll try some of those fuzzy chitons. -Hans
  9. power compacts

I always snagged mine online from AH Supply.
  10. biopellet ?

Go with the 1200 initially..... but you may need to go with bigger for a full 1000ml. I'm using a maxijet 1200 to drive 500ml in a phosban 150 reactor, and it's just about perfect. -Hans
  11. suffolk county

    Islip area here.
  12. job in aquarium trade?

I kinda almost feel dirty suggesting this, but have you tried the chain stores such as Petco or Petland? They may not be the best at the fish side of things, but it can at least get you something to put in a resume and help you get into better places for what you're looking to do. Not to...
  13. Nitrates are KILLIN me! Tried EVERYTHING!

Well, if the phosphates are going down and everything is healthy, sounds like you're on the right path by taking it slow at this point. Regular water changes, clean the skimmer daily, and keep an eye on the water conditions to see what's happening. How big and how often are you doing water...
  14. Nitrates are KILLIN me! Tried EVERYTHING!

I know I'm jumping into this thing a bit late, but a couple ideas popped into my head.- As mentioned in a couple of other posts, the bare bottom tank does concern me a bit in this case. A deep enough substrate also helps to contiribute to the denitrification. You may want to look into...
  15. Algea boom

Yeah, that's the reason I may have to skip it and go straight to a teardown. The tank is in the main room of the house, and there's always somebody else home. I can get away with a lot, but a god-awful stench permeating the house is close to the top of no-no's. -Hans
