  1. Lighting Question (Power Compact)

I have a 4x65 on a 55 gallon. The lighting seems strong enough for anything as long as you place the corals well. The tank is mixed with SPS, LPS, zoos and softies. All seems fine, with the SPS at the top, and no losses. The two SPS corals that I have, I started from 1" frags one year ago. One...
  2. What kind of Algae is this (and what will eat it)

Looking some more at it, it appears to be pterocladia. This is mentioned in Sprung's Algae book but with no picture. Looking at some pictures on the web, this seems to be it, but a search on the forums here show no hits on this species. At one point there were many red macroalgaes growing, and...
  3. What kind of Algae is this (and what will eat it)

I have tried to rip to out by hand. It seems well rooted in the rock. These pictures show what it looks like two weeks after I have removed it.
  4. What kind of Algae is this (and what will eat it)

What kind of agae is this and what will eat it? I currently have a yellow tang, an algae blenny, zebra and red-legged hermit crabs, and some snails and nothing seems to eat this stuff, which has recently appeared, enough to make a dent. These pictures are about two weeks of growth. There...
  5. overflow suggestions needed

I have a lifereef overflow. It has worked flawlessly for the 9 months I have had it, and always starts up after a power outage. I have not cleaned it, and it does not require any sort of bubble remover. You can only buy it from Lifereef directly, and sometimes you have to wait for it to be...
  6. suggest a chiller for my 55 gal

I just bought a Pacific Coast 1/10th for my 55. It is reasonably small, cheap and quiet but as it hasn't gotten hot here yet, so I can't say thhat much about it.
  7. What digital cameras is everyone using to get their fish pic

It is hard. The effective aparture becomes smaller as you approach 1:1. You have to keep the shutter spped high because the coral is moving. That, and despite the ammount of lighting over the tank, the tank is really not that bright compared to outside. Normally, for macro, one would just...
  8. What digital cameras is everyone using to get their fish pic

I had a coolpix 990, but I have replaced it with a Nikon D70 with a 105mm Macro Lens. The coolpix is great if what you are taking a picture of stands still, while the (more expensive) D70 is fantastic, even on moving objects. Linked is a image of a brain coral. Most of the details (on the...
  9. Mushrooms….

I bought a Ricordia polyp yesterday and it was attached to three small pieces of rubble. I tried placing it on a rock, figuring it would attach. About 5 minutes later a crab came out and grabbed the thing and pulled it behind the rocks. I took apart the rocks, managed to save the polyp and...
  10. Another 55 starting

After much research today, my reef started with the first shipment from Tampa Bay Saltwater's "Package". My tank, in its former life, had only SW fish, a Emperor 400 filter, and a single strip light. I have replaced just about everything but the tank, and crated a sump one floor below, in the...
  11. Ammount of rock

I am in the process of converting a 55 sw fish tank to a reef. I am very interested in aquacultured rock. I wanted to order the live rock from Tampa Bay and get their "Package". They recomend 2 lbs of rock per gallon. I am concerend that this may be too much, but when I did a search, people...
  12. Protein Skimmers

I have a remora which was horribly noisy. At the time, they only came with the Rio pump. This pump would also never restart easily. I recently replaced it with the Maxijet. The noise is now much, much quieter. It is still not silent, but it is not out of line with other common fishtank noises.
  13. Thinking about a 55 gal reef....

I have a 55 gallon SW tank that I have had for several years that I would like to convert to a reef tank. The tank currently does not have a sump. The sump must go in the basement to keep noise down. I would like to do it right the first time, and only buy what is needed. Here is the list I...
