the tank looks awesome! it is more exciting to know that the tank will be showcasing the beauty of reef to the students at your school. hopefully it will lead to more people falling in love with the reef and in turn we can do more to protect it. keep up the good work!
as long as you're not going to set up a plenum, the grain size shouldn't matter. the caution would be to make sure that the sand you collect isn't polluted.
