  1. auto top off - sump float valve/switch position?

I use: Timer clock: http://www.smarthome.com/1090.html Timer switch: http://www.smarthome.com/2002.html Low flow water pump (normal air-line tubing fits on this): http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/Plumbing- ... P-OFF-PUMP)/product_info.html Any tank or pail with a lid will hold the pump and it's...
  2. Suddenly Unhappy Mushrooms

I doubt this has anything to do with it, but I remember reading that the aluminum oxide based phosphate absorbers can stress soft corals. I think there is something about fully rinsing the absorber prior to use so that particles of aluminum oxide do not float out and settle on the coral...
  3. can someone stupify an explination of a closed loop?

It's Echotech: http://www.ecotechmarine.com/products/vortech.htm Use the Mag-drive as a sump pump. Thanks.
  4. single pump, skimmer and return

    Hi Sam, Tenecor Tank 36" L x 18" W x 16" H (10368 in^3 44.88 gal) 780 gph @ 1/2" from top of combs (13) Thanks, Kenneth.
  5. single pump, skimmer and return

Just in case anyone else was looking for the size of this pump, I had to email Aqua Medic to get the physical dimensions of the Ocean Runner 6500: 8" x 6.52" x 8.5" I think it'll be too large for the pump compartment on that BS-1 sump (5" width). Danner Mag-Drive 18 (and 12) is: 6.4" x 4.5" x...
  6. table acropora, optimal growth rate (was , height)

If I started with two different similar sized frags, one branching acropora and one tabular: would the tabular grow faster horizontally and slower vertically (than the branching one)? or would the tabular grow just as fast vertically, and just ultimately grow a lot wider than the branching one...
  7. single pump, skimmer and return

Ok, I've been searching through our forum posts on this and have decided to look at a different skimmer and return pump. Skimmer: Octopus DNW-110 Recirculating http://www.aquacave.com/octopus-dnw-110 ... r-983.html Return Pump: Ocean Runner 6500 http://www.aquacave.com/ocean-runner-65 ...
  8. table acropora, optimal growth rate (was , height)

Ok, so if I assumed it had optimal: lighting, water flow, water quality, tank size, food, etc. Is there any ball park estimate at vertical growth rate (or growth rate in any direction :)? Thanks!
  9. nassarius snail, sand required

Ok, I moved them down to the refugium, but still no burrowing. They seem to try to get down under the refugium substrate, but them give up. I have a mix of mud and sand, and the top layer is mostly the mud. So I'm guessing the Nassarius don't like to burrow in mud. They are just moving...
  10. single pump, skimmer and return

Hi, I'm thinking of replacing my current sump and pump, and was wondering if anyone had any experience trying to use tee off their return pump to feed their skimmer. Is it more trouble than it's worth? Too much of a balancing act? I'd assume all that would be necessary is a gate valve...
  11. table acropora, optimal growth rate (was , height)

Hi, Does anyone know how high to expect a table Acropora (such as Acropora hyacinthus) to grow in an aquarium after a few years? Would 10 inches (base surface to water surface) be enough? Thanks.
  12. nassarius snail, sand required

Hi, Has anyone kept the Nassarius snail successfully in a bare bottom tank, with no access to sand? The local pet store I bought three from, had them in one of those acrylic partition multi-tanks with no sand. I'm just thinking I should move them down to my reverse daylight chaetomorphia...
  13. Salt mix from Sea Water (al-la Red Sea)

So does room temperature or solar evaporation cause it to form calcite or something? Maybe you could get that stuff to dissolve in your CO2 calcium reactor. Or use one of those planted tank CO2 systems in the water change mixing tank.
  14. bare bottom vacuum end

Hi, Does anyone have any design/plans (or links to) for a vacuum end for a bare bottom tank? Right now I'm using a python water changer with that big gravel hydro cleaning end replaced with a piece of flex pex (slightly smaller than the vinyl tubing). It works ok, but I was thinking that if I...
  15. Indo reefs zapped for conservation

This is the 'mineral accretion' technology? I found a search hit on our site for an article that mentions it: http://www.reefs.org/library/talklog/e_ ... 20600.html
