  1. "stuff" on sand bed

Sounds more like cyano than diatoms do you have a picture? Your going to have to limit the input of nutrients into the tank, wether it be through feeding, topup water or whatever. If you test the water now everything may look fine, but the nutrients get used very quickly and give a false...
  2. Removing the sand bed...Is this a good idea?

Thats your opinion and you are entitled to it, however I have kept a number of tanks over the years (one going on 11 years and one 9 years) and I always use a shallow sand bed. It looks much better in my opinion and I have never had a build up of detritus in my sand. If the tanks is setup...
  3. Banggai Cardinals-- what did I do wrong?

Zonkers, I think you really need to do more research and reading while your fish are in the quarantine tank. At the moment I don't believe you have the knowledge to succesfully keep a marin tank.
  4. Removing the sand bed...Is this a good idea?

Not really the point is it? My point is that you are better off not changing the system in such a dramatic way as removing all your sand, when a much simpler solution for example increasign flow, cleanup crew and less feeding.
  5. Removing the sand bed...Is this a good idea?

I don't believe that is the problem that he is trying to fix.
  6. Removing the sand bed...Is this a good idea?

I agree that DSB is another fad. I won't use either. Just because BB keeps coming back doesn't make it any less of a fad. Either way wouldn't you agree that changing your tank setup by doing something as drastic as removing all the sand is quite unnecessary?
  7. Banggai Cardinals-- what did I do wrong?

I think 8 is too many fish to be adding to a 20gal tank in one go. You need to let the tank adapt to the bioload.
  8. Removing the sand bed...Is this a good idea?

Honestly you are better off leaving it as it is. BB is just another fad. If you are worried about detritus accumalating on the sand bed, why not increase circulation, feed less and add more of a cleanup crew? Each of these options will provide more benefits to your tank.
  9. Sea Grass

Thats right Len, I believe you need a nutrient rich substrate such as mud. I don't think it can use nutrients from the water to the same degree as nutrients from the substrate. I don't believe most reef tank systems would be able to sustain it for a long period of time.
  10. Question on Phos-Ban

Why are you using phosban for such a long time? You should think about where all the phosphate is coming from and try to reduce it coming into your tank.
  11. Shrimp and fish query...

You will find that the shrimp moult fairly regularly. In nature they do it to coincide with the new moon. Cleaning is normal but holding the fish in place like that seems a bit strange. Doesn't sound like it is doing any damage though, so it should be ok.
  12. nano filtration

I've seen some really nice Sinularias around. I have one that is a flourescent green. Comes up really nice especially with actinic supplement. They don't seem to be as common though. Good luck anyway, a lot of great corals are to be had by being in the right place at the right time as I'm sure...
  13. Looking for Diaseris information

I have a couple of Diaseris in my tank, they look almost exactly like a Fungia except they are smaller. When you turn them over, most of them have a wedge shaped mark where they have broken off from another colony.
  14. Looking for Diaseris information

Sure thats the right pic? That isn't a Diaseris.
  15. Blue Tang with white spots

I would try not to move it to a hospital tank. The move will only stress it more. Best bet is to keep the fish in the same tank and keep the water quality and feeding up.
