  1. Best place to mail order live rock

I ordered from TBS and was very pleased with the life on the rock. After a long time much of the life is still there. Yes you need to cure it and yes there are some unwanted hitchihkers but I think it is the best deal out there if you are into aquaculture and diminished reef destruction. HTH...
  2. kinda dumb nori question

Thanks for all the replies! I think that is the same nori that I bought and it was like 2 bucks or something. Much more inexpensive than fish store seaweed. Thanks again for the help. LB 8)
  3. Can you ID this algae? (Picture included)

I noticed that the algae would grow fastest/most where any sand or other nutrients would build up/settle or get caught in a rock crevace. I would use a turkey baster and blow off my rocks and this seems to help. Most of my algae just occured on rocks or coral bases and powerheads. I would try...
  4. kinda dumb nori question

I got a yellow tang and a lawnmower blennie a few weeks ago. I have been feeding seaweed selects and they love that. I've heard alot about nori and went to look for it at the asian foods store and there were so many different kinds. Some said they were seasoned, some were different colors etc...
  5. Can you ID this algae? (Picture included)

I've had the same stuff but a green form in my tank for a long time. After 2 years of taking rocks out every other month and pulling that stuff off I finally have it under control. I got a yellow tang and a lawnmower blennie as well as a number of emerald crabs and that combo has kept it from...
  6. Can I use mylar sheeting in place of a reflector?

Heres a pic of it lit up with room lights out. It reflects pretty well, maybe not as much as spider light reflectors but it does the job better than painting the inside of the canopy or something like that
  7. Tampa Bay Saltwater Rock?

I wanted a deeper sandbed than the package would give me so I used it to seed some aragonite that I put in the tank before I purchased the package. This seems to have worked out good. There were lots of critters in the sand and I still see some chitons that live in the sand from time to time...
  8. Tampa Bay Saltwater Rock?

I got "the package" from TBS and its great. The rock is more dense and heavier than other live rock so its a little harder to work with. There is so much more life on it though such as sponges, corals, etc. Many of the sponges on my rock are still alive after over 2 years. I had the rock...
  9. Let's play a game! ID the anemone.

I Sprung's book The Reef Aquarium V2, It shows a pic of a possible hybrid between h. aurora and h. malu. This anemone looks pretty much exactly like mine. I agrees h. aurora has much more defined rings. I have found this type of anemone easy to keep since, at least in my case, it does not...
  10. Uncommon Corals in the industry

I've never seen one of these for sale. I think its a cladacora or something. I'm pretty sure its from the florida area since I got it thrown in with a shipment of live rock tampa bay saltwater. Anyone else have one? It is extremely slow growing since in the 2 years I've had it its grown half...
  11. Can I use mylar sheeting in place of a reflector?

I don't know if this will help or not but for a reflector I used metal flashing for roofs. I got a roll for very cheap at home depot. It doesn't seem to hold any heat and doesn't rust etc. I just covered the whole inside of my canopy with it. LB 8)
  12. Let's play a game! ID the anemone.

When I first got my anemone about 4 years ago it was small and looked similar to that anemone. When it got bigger, alot of the tentacles on the outer rim lost the ring like indentations but the ones in the middle kept them. You can see some pics of it at this site...
  13. Frogspawn requirements

In my 75 I have 2 175w MH and a frogspawn that sits about midway. I have never had a problem with it under this light intensity. If the frogspawn is coming from a lower intensity then it may be affected at first. If this is the case, start lower and you can work your way up the rockwork as it...
  14. The Anemone Thread/Anemone 101

I have had a heteractic malu for almost 4 years now. A pair of false percs call it home and spawn regularly. I housed it under vho for the first couple years in a 20 gal tank. I then upgraded to a 75 gal with 2 175 mh with 12k bulbs. It has never moved more than a couple inches from side to...
  15. What was your first inhabitant...

My first saltwater tank was a complete disaster. I had a few damsels, a flame angel and a skilter. Somehow I managed to knock my strip light into the tank and electrocute my fish and myself and kill everything. My next attempt (after much research on the hobby) was much more successfull. I...
