  1. My 300G Built-in Reef - UPDATE - Tear down thread

This hobby sucks for instant gratification don't it? It's going to be another year before this thing gets close to its potential.
  2. High Alkalinity, 450 Calcium very low PH (7.3)....Help!!!!

I think the only way those numbers are possible is if you have excess disolved C02 or you are adding some other acid. You likely have one or both of the following problems.... 1) Not enough aeration to get C02 out of the tank water. 2) A high level of CO2 in your home which is not uncommon in...

  4. My 300G Built-in Reef - UPDATE - Tear down thread

That could be interesting. You thinking along the lines of Oscars or Koi or something more exotic? ;-) m-fine
  5. Starboard

People use it instead of sand or gravel. Basically it is a barebottom tank with the glass covered. m-fine
  6. Funniest thing you've heard at your LFS

Hey skilters can be great if you don't like having to empty the collection cup all the time ;-)
  7. Blue Green Cyano

Phosban or other phosphate remover, increased water movement, new bulbs if they are more then a year old. Also make sure you are using RO/DI water that is nutrient free or the water changes may hurt not help. Oh and make sure you are using low phosphate foods and not too much. m-fine
  8. check out this new gadget

If you had one already populated and ready to go when you get a nitrate emergancy, say a dead animal you didn't can't get out overwhelming your live rock, it might be neat. The fact that it takes 3 weeks to colonize with bacteria is very limiting, so I guess it would probably be best for an...
  9. Old Tank Syndrome: What's your thoughts?

Just a note, I am not recommending you do this, and certainly not that you do all water changes this way. I am just telling you it can be done and how, and that I have been able to do it without loss. If you do it in your tank it is your decision to weigh the risks and the benefits. I last...
  10. Old Tank Syndrome: What's your thoughts?

There are two ways to change 90%+, I have done both but like the dry method better. The "wet method" is done by making a new batch of water that is slightly colder and maybe a little higher in salinity so it is heavier. All circulation is turned off and the new water is carefully pumped to...
  11. My 300G Built-in Reef - UPDATE - Tear down thread

I never bought a mushroom, but one hitched its way in a few years back and now I am trying my best to eradicate them. Aptaisia are wimps compared to my green stiped mushrooms! One fought back yesterday and squirted me in the eye, MAN did that burn, and half my face was numb for a few hours...

  14. My 300G Built-in Reef - UPDATE - Tear down thread

There is quite a range between bare and deep sand you know :) How about a thin layer of larger pice gravel or crushed rock? Say .5 to 1.0 centimeters an inch deep or maybe even barely a single layer. It will siphon just as easy as BB or starboard and look better too! m-fine P.s. Is...
  15. My algae tank - New thread

In my opinion, telling people they need to use Kalk these days is similar to the advice I got in the late 80's telling me I needed a wet dry to keep inverts. The method worked, but it turns out there were better ways. I am not the first crazy guy to think this up either, I learned it from...
