I have a 300 gal FW planted aquarium. I have 4" flourite substrate, CO2 with controller, and about 3 Watt/gal lighting. I am new at this hobby and was not adding any Iron for the first few months. I was adding Potassium and my fish were adding the nitrogen. I was seeing slow growth and...
About 2 months ago I switched to FW planted tank. I have been very dissapointed in the quality & quantity of advice I have been receiving. I think you guys spoiled me.
Where I can find FW people as obsessed and intellegant as y'all?
My wife has always been alergic to shellfish. Recently it has gotten so bad she cannot even be in the same building as my system. I have tried several things and have decided to quit reefing. I may consider keeping the tank and converting it to FW. I am an engineering analitical type who...
I like the plastic screen because it stopps your ssnd stirring critters and obnoxious fish from mixing it all up. You want to keep the small stuff on the top to keep the detrius near the top where it can be re meatbolized instead of sinking down. Eventually some of the small stuff will filter...
I've had 2 in a 180 for about 1 year. I love em. my sand bed (really a plenum with 4" on top) is crawling with all types of life and yet it is still white.

Sorry I don't have a digital camera. But it is really simple. I put a 8 gal corner overflow in my 58 which hangs from the ceiling in an unfinished area of my shop. Out of the bottom of the corner I put a 1.5" 180 elbo to turn water up. about 2" below the top of the 58 I put another...
Is there any reason not to leave the CC and put a screen and oolite or 1mm on top 1 or 2" thick. I have done this with good success. I would add 1/2" per week for 4 weeks and you shouldn't get any spikes.
I siphon surge 8 gallons at a time out of my 58 gal refugium into my 180 display. this raises the level in the main tank about 3/4" for about 15 seconds every 1.5 min. I have the level in the display set about 1.5" below the top at low tide which still gives me a 3/4" safety margin at high...
I would recomend running the lights about 4 hours per day untill you get your Macro. This will help to get things beginning to balance and help with pods without an overgrowth of hair.
Add a refugium with caulerpa and plant growth lights. The hair will grow in the refugium untill the caulerpa takes off. Some hair may still grow in the main tank but not as fast. Keep a couple of tangs to eat it as fast as it grows. Preferably yellow and Kole yellow eye.
Thanks. I had a Maxi 600 laying around and decided to try it. I guess I'll know in a few days if this is more accurate than tapping into the system pump.
