  1. How safe are external overflow boxes?

Well, I thought it was a neat idea, at least... :? In any case, I was going to have the tank cut professionally, so time spent isn't an issue. I think I'm going to go with this design after seeing someone else's 37 drilled with the same configuration.
  2. How safe are external overflow boxes?

Actually, I meant the kind of external overflow boxes where you drill the back of your tank, then silicone the overflow box to the outside of the tank instead of the inside. The thread I linked to in my first post has an example. Thanks for the input, though :)
  3. How safe are external overflow boxes?

Hi everybody, I have an empty Oceanic 37g cube (24" x 18" x 21") that I want to add an overflow to. I've considered several designs - classic internal overflow box, overflow box running the full length of the tank along the back wall, and external overflow box added to the back exterior of the...
  4. My 20 gallon Nano

Wow, your setup looks wonderful! I love the fact that you've included the macro in your main display. It gives the whole tank a very nice, natural feeling, like you took a chunk of a real ocean reef and placed it in the tank :) Your fish look really happy too.
  5. "Clean" internal overflow box idea... will it work

Thank you so much for the quick reply!! I'll look into the sandblasting. Yeah, as you said, my main concern is leakage from the main display to the overflow. I really appreciate your input!
  6. "Clean" internal overflow box idea... will it work

Hi everyone, I've been trying to figure out how to make a "clean" presentation of an internal overflow box for the past few days, and this is what I've come up with so far. Basically, the overflow box is simply a pane cut to fit 1" in front of the real back wall of the tank. The returns run...
  7. 20g or 37g?

Thanks for the advice! Yes, stocking will be extremely slow... probably along the lines of 1 fish per month or so, and only after the parameters have been stable for a few months. I'm working with a small monthly budget, which is actually kind of nice because it forces me to wait longer period...
  8. 20g or 37g?

I agree, that would be a nice stocking list! I didn't know much about the swimming patterns of the fish since I haven't seen them in person too often, so your description sounds really nice. :) I'm not sure yet if I should have the tank covered or not... I do love the six-lined wrasses and the...
  9. 20g or 37g?

Thanks!!! :) What do you think of the fish stocking? Is that OK, or too heavy?
  10. 20g or 37g?

Oh, and by the way, I think I've decided to go with the 37 gallon. The price difference between the two is only about $150, including the difference in price for lighting, live rock, sand, etc.
  11. 20g or 37g?

Thanks so much for the help, especially on the flame angel. I checked into the fixtures and two will definitely fit without a problem - the tank is 18.5" deep and each fixture is only 7.5" wide - so I'm looking at about 2 inches of free space on either side - I'm not going to use a canopy...
  12. 20g or 37g?

Hi everyone, I've been planning on setting up a 20 gallon (24" x 12" x 16") mini reef for the past three months. Space is limited, so that's why I was considering such a small setup. I've been keeping FW cichlids for about 4 years, and planted tanks for a year. Well, as always happens, I...
