  1. Brown algae taking over my tank! What do I do?

I have 4 flourescents in my tank. I have the first come on 10 am & off 10 pm. the other three alternate in half hour intervals on and off after the first one. About the biowheels. I agree - they do have quite a bad rep. I also don't have a sump (learned about it too late), but am...
  2. Going saltwater

I found the mollies to be really hardy. I only lost one to a powerhead. The advantage of doing it the way I did was that the mollies kept eating all the algae & also put quite a bio-load on the tank - so when the tank cycled it was used to quite a load already. I then just took out one or two...
  3. RO or DI UNIT?

oops. now i feel silly. i jsut assumed that it would use electricity. so i guess my problems are solved. thanks guys (e-bay, here i come).
  4. RO or DI UNIT?

hhmmm. good prices for those units (on the links), but i forgot that the states uses 110 volt appliances instead of our 220 down here in sunny south africa. that really sucks. RO water units here cost about $1000.
  5. RO or DI UNIT?

Thanks for the links guys. I'll check it out.
  6. Going saltwater

I added a few black mollies a week after I started cycling my tank. They're cheap and you can do almost anything to them except whack em with a plank before they die. They just helped my tank cycle quicker. After my tank cycled I just gave them back to to LFS as I started adding other livestock.
  7. Brown algae taking over my tank! What do I do?

Your tank is still curing. It's quite normal to get these algae blooms. Your lights are defianately on for too long (12 hours is good). How is the temperature in your tank? I've found heat to contribute a lot too. Once your tank has cured you can add some guys that love aglae (hermit crabs...
  8. RO or DI UNIT?

What's better? I'm currently getting RO from the LFS, but I'm tired of lugging 7 gallon barrels of water up 3 flights of stairs. So, I'm in the market for one of the two units. RO units are quite pricey & I heard that they need to run constantly (which is too much). How about DI units...
  9. WHAT SUPPLEMENTS TO USE?

OKAY THEN. I'M GONNA GO WITH DOING REGULAR WATER CHANGES ONLY (EXCEPT FOR CALCIUM & ALKALINITY BUFFER). AT THE MOMENT I'M DOING 5% A WEEK WITH INSTANT OCEAN. IS THAT GOOD ENOUGH? I FEEL LIKE I'VE BEEN HAD WITH THESE PET STORES.
  10. WHAT SUPPLEMENTS TO USE?

I currently have a 60 gallon tank (FOWLR). The tank is pretty mature (9 months). I'm busy getting some metal halides & will soon after go for some corals. Can anyone tell me the whole range of supplements I should be adding for a full-blown reef other than calium & a buffering agent? At the...
