  1. petition to see Len's tank

    Joining the mob....
  2. can i keep a BTA?

I don't think you can predict how often a BTA will split. Sometimes they split spontaneously, sometimes due to stress. I've had mine for a year and a half and they first split last July and then again last month. So in my case....once a year. I know of other people with huge BTAs that they've...
  3. can i keep a BTA?

I would say no. I have a 20 gallon with 96 watts of PC, and do not think it's enough. I also have a 29g with 225 watts of VHO - I have 3 RBTAs in there due to multiple splits. Believe me, if I thought for a second one would survive in the 20g it would've been moved already...
  4. wazzel's stand

Wazzel- I really like your stand, it looks nice and open. I need to do the same to have enough room for my sump. What is the length of your tank? I'm trying to figure out if this design would be sufficient for a 5 foot tank or whether I would need more vertical support. Thanks for posting the...
  5. help on seting up 29 gal tank

I also have a 29g tank. I have VHO lights (PFO brand - 3 X 75 watts) and a CPR Bak Pak skimmer. I started out with about 30 lbs of sand and 20 lbs of live rock, then added more rock slowly over time, I believe I'm up to about 35-40 lbs now.
  6. how to quiet a sump? (and a wife)

    A wise, wise man......
  7. Allrighty, now what???

  9. Question for the scientists

Tell you what Guy: I work for a clinical laboratory. And the next time we're getting rid of old instruments, I'm gong to keep my eye out for you. No telling what kind of fun you could have with a chloridometer (measures actual Cloride ions) or an Ion-Selective Electrode method........

  11. Question for the scientists

Thank you, now I understand what you are saying. What I was having trouble with was the statement that SG could change and Salinity would not. Since as you say the only measurement made is of refractive index, I was trying to figure out how the SG and Salinity could be independent measures to...
  12. Question for the scientists

"ATC Refractometers cannot measure Specific Gravity. " What are you saying they are measuring? "I could be wrong but I believe traditional Refractometers measured Degrees of Brix for winemaking. Sugar content or something like that." Sugar content in liquid...probably by measuring the SG...
  13. Question for the scientists

Still not making sense to me. Traditional refractometers ONLY had an SG scale, I think adding the salinity scale is the deceptive part. It implies that you are getting a direct measurement of Salt content, and that is not true.
  14. Question for the scientists

To be honest, I can't believe the temperature correction part is all that big a deal. When I first used a refractometer, it was in a clinical chemistry lab (many, many years ago) and we never did any temperature corrections that I recall. The only calibrations we performed were to verify that...
  15. Question for the scientists

Wait....Salinity IS what matters. And yes, SG is a perfectly acceptable way to measure it. But probably only until something better comes along. SG measures total dissolved solids, so is accurate as long as all you have mixed is water and salt. I'd bet if someone came out with an affordable way...
