Here is my stand under construction. It is 40" tall to the bottom of the tank and 42" to the top of the trim. I built it so I will not see the black trim of the tank.

The leggs are 2x6 running the length of the tank and 2x4 running the short side of the tank. With 2x6 for all the tank support.

Here is the innards.

I decided to sheet the top and bottom with 1/2" plywood. Here it is with the sheeting.

I had to deal with some "issues" so I did not take pics of just the sheets. Here is it all trimmed out waiting for me to figure out what to do for a door.

I did not sheet the back. The is just a piece of plywood leaning against the stand. I started working on the hood, but did not get far. THe wife and I decided to go to the museum this afternoon and enjoy time without the kids. Here is as far as I got. I play to work on it some more Tuesday.

Nice looking stand. Your cabinet building experience looks like it kicked right in. Nice looking hitachi by the way. :)

I bought a miter saw. I used my skill saw for most of the cutting. I think I am going to cut the door in half and make two actual doors out of it. It is 39" wide and woud be a bit much for a single door. Also, the corners did not come out a nice as I would have hoped so I think I will end up putting a corner molding on it.

Miltzed in the DIY fourm. I thought that was reserved for the sump.

I brought a Dewalt 218, I think, a sliding miter saw. Based on what I read after the purchase, many think it is not as good as its precessors. Should I get a Hitachi? How do you like it?

Got a few hours to work tonight. I am not crazy about the way the top is comming out. The edge of the plywood can be seen. I guess I will have to trim that.

You can get an iron on wood veneer to cover the edge of the plywood at any home imp store - it is quick and easy.

Looks good. :D

I was considering getting something to put on with contact cement. I just have not been able to go look yet.

I would just get a small roll of heat and stick wood veneer from Lowes. It's cheap,it's wood, it works, and it looks good.

Wazzel-
I really like your stand, it looks nice and open. I need to do the same to have enough room for my sump. What is the length of your tank? I'm trying to figure out if this design would be sufficient for a 5 foot tank or whether I would need more vertical support.
Thanks for posting the pictures, it really helps...

The foot print of the tank is 54x26. I am guessing it would be good. You could replace the 2x6 legs with 2x8's to get a bit more strength.
