  1. I am about to order a Protein Skimmer

Be wary of buying skimmers at the LFS. Most lfs carry only the mass produced skimmers including red sea prisms, sea clones, and read sea berlins (their "high end" skimmers). At the prices the lfs charge for these you are better off mail ordering a euro-reef, precision marine, or aqua C in sump...
  2. OT : Tesselata moray eel disappears...

Be sure and check the toilet bowl prior to use...tesalattas have sharp teeth
  3. My semi-random rant for the month...

This topic got way off track. Notwithstanding everyone's bigger picture political and religious views, there is one very pragmatic point that has been missed. That is, regardless of your motives for keeping reefs, irresponsible reef keeping, particlularly when coupled with the "short-timer"...
  4. The Marine Center...not answering the phone?

Sorry Leonard, Those were lineatus at FF Express (my point was when these "rare" guys come in all of the "usual suspect" retailers that carry rare fish get their hands on them). There was a rhomboid that sat at Old Town for over a year without being purchased a while back (same time Marine...
  5. The Marine Center...not answering the phone?

No web sites, but Ultimate does do mail order via phone (old town does if you know the owner). I don't have the number with me, but they advertise in FAMA if you have a copy handy.
  6. The Marine Center...not answering the phone?

danmhippo, Trust me, Old Town and Ultimate Aquarium get the same stuff marine center does! Marine Center gets their stuff from the very same distributors that everyone else does. Stuff is seasonal, so when it is available (a shipment comes into the country) all the high end stores get it...
  7. The Marine Center...not answering the phone?

This has been par for the course for the marine center for the last few years. They never answer the phone! They don't always return your voice or e-mail message...depends on how "high ticket" your order will be. As for the "everything is quarantined and eating for 2 weeks," guarantee...I...
  8. My semi-random rant for the month...

Slojmn, Glad to hear that you got these rarities and from your posts on the board know you will give them a good home :) My point was that the market place board is a good indicator of the majority of folks in the hobby right now. Lots of posts for 4 month old equipment and entire set ups =...
  9. My semi-random rant for the month...

Well said, Sharkky! Some may accuse me of being old school, but I think that there is a subcategory of the keeping up with the Jonses aquarist. Lately on this board and others I see user X post that he/she is setting up a reef. A later post by user X says that they have set up their tank with...
  10. EuroReef Owners

Definitely one of my gripes with this design...who wants a cascade of water into their sump? ER and the other skimmer manufacturers should really look into designing in sump skimmers with submerged returns (yes I know that this affects the skimmer water level, but it can be designed to avoid this)
  11. Acropora in a 2.5 gallon

Dana Riddle documented his work on a 5G with 4 X 9W pc with various sps species in Marine Fish Monthly a few years back.
  12. How do YOU get rid of surface scum in tanks?

I have two powerheads near the surface. When I do water changes every two weeks I skim the film off the top. A fine mesh net also works.
  13. Celebrities who Reefkeep

Also, one of the guys who wrote for Married with Children has a sweet in-wall reef...he's on the boards every now and again.
  14. Celebrities who Reefkeep

Mariah carey, some guy from the jaguars, and master P had really nice reef setups (in wall, custom, marble trim), but the stuff inside was pretty boring (sarcophytons, damsels, yellow tangs). Just watch MTV cribs...there's a fish tank in every episode.
  15. Difficult Anthias Species

Has anyone had luck with ventralis anthias? I'm asking because I am setting up a new tank later this summer (after a move) with the main species being a group of ventralis anthias. I've looked at both of S. Michael's books, but would like to know if anyone has actually kept these with some level...
