  1. Stuffs a floating when changing water and cleaning - Good?

I don't think stirring up sediment is anything to worry about. Depending, of course, on how much and how frequently you stir it up. Many people use a turkey baster or small power head to "blast" their live rock to stir loose sediment into the water column before doing a water change. I've been...
  2. Sump question

Another thing you might want to do is mark your water level in the sump with the return pump running. Then, stop the return pump, let things settle and mark that level as well. This way you can tell how much evaporation is occuring and also how much new saltwater to add during water changes.
  3. Phosphate problems??

make sure to use rodi water during your water changes. There's a good chance your tap water has phosphate in it.
  4. Anyone know where I can buy a trained chelmon?

The Berhghia verrucornis will die when the aiptasia are gone... It feeds on aiptasia exclusively. If you live around other people with aiptasia in their tank, maybe you could work out passing the little fella on to them once your tank is clear. Another option would be to setup an aiptasia...
  5. Question about venting a MH T5 comobo light fixture

I am wondering how critical it is to vent the actual fixture. If the fixture is suspended above the tank, its easy enough to have a fan blow across the surface of the water to increase evaporation and reduce the heat added by the lights. In looking at different fixtures, the one's that come...
  6. Opinions on Peppermint shrimp to rid Aiptasia Anemone

Aiptasia will multiply if they are provided with enough nutrients. They also release offspring if you nuke them with kalk, joe's juice, boiling water or whatever. If you are going to nuke, turn off your pumps, do the nuking and then syphon the areas you nuke to remove any remnants... I do my...
  7. Can coral recieve too much light?

What kind of mushroom is it? A picture would be very helpful. I would guess its the temperature fluctuations or something other than your lighting. It is possible to light corals too much... Corals live at many different depths in the ocean. And their lighting needs can be determined based...
  8. pipe cleaner thing

Are there sponges that extend out and sweep water at night? At night, it reaches lengths of 4 inches or so. When its extended, the fuzzies spread out and it looks kind of like a pipe cleaner. It seems to move against the current when it wants. and contracts every few minutes or so... maybe...
  9. What do you think

I've read in several places that running a reef with no fish is no problem at all. In fact I've heard of the following advantages: 1 - Its easier to target feed since fish wont be trying to steal the food. 2 - Nutrient control may be easier without fish who tend to be sloppy eaters 3 - You...
  10. pipe cleaner thing

picture is attached... this is how it looks with lights on. i tried to get a night image but my camera wont get a clear image. as if this image is clear :(
  11. deepest DSB band?

I can't speak to this from experience but I've read in a few places that the particle size of your sand also has an impact. Finer sand requires less depth to accomplish the same denitrification as a coarser sand.
  12. pipe cleaner thing

Sorry for not having a picture yet, I haven't figured out how to get a good picture with my camera yet. hopefully i can explain well enough to get a lead on finding an image of this thing somewhere... During the day, it is inactive, but hangs limp out of a hole in my live rock about 1/2 to 3/4...
  13. White specs swimming in new tank...What are they?

I am somewhat new to the hobby myself, but have done a decent amount of research into nuisance algae control... Typically, the name of the game with algae is nutrient control. Hence cjsrch recommending using a filter to clean out the water you fill your tank with. Reverse Osmosis /...
  14. Considering a hang on syphon overflow

But the thought of it scares me! I think its possible to prevent flodding in most cases, at the expense of a likely pump burn out. I'm wondering what you all may think? Thanks!
  15. Why is My pH Low?

I'm pretty new to this all myself, but I've seen the following recommended a handful of times to debug a low pH problem... Take a cup or so full of water and put an air stone in it for a few hours. Then test the pH of the water in the cup. If the pH is higher then you probably need to figure...
