These are SO cool! I saw someone post a photo of one on Facebook and I was intrigued. Wish I could have one... (We have cats and two little girls) What do they eat? How long do they live? How "smart" are they?

I feed mine a high protein dried cat food. They average 4-6 years I think. Not sure how smart they are but if you handle them a lot they become a lot of fun.

How big do they get? Do you keep them in a cage or aquarium or do you give them a bit more freedom? This is one of those animals that really tempts me... But if I show up with one more thing, especially a breathing thing, my wife will get rid of me to make room for it.

Not at all. Their behavior is much better/different than gerbils and hamsters.

I am pretty positive that you can't keep them in NYC. I knew a girl that worked with me that used rescue them and she lived in NJ and she told me that they are illegal to keep in the city.

Not surprising since Iguana's are illegal too for some reason. I'd suggest someone actually check the F&W website to be sure though.

All boids including ball pythons are illegal in NYC.
