With a point and shoot it's important to keep the camera steady. However which way you accomplish it, is fine (tripod/securing). Obviously the macro setting, and if you can get away with it, flash. Turning off most of the circulation helps alot too. If the subject is still, you might get away without much flash, if any. But it depends on the available light.

The important thing to remember about macro photography is that just like the subject is magnified, so is the vibration. The closer you focus, the more magnified your movements become. Therefore even the slightest movement can ruin a picture. So make sure the camera is well secured and that it cannot move.
