what is the difference between the 717 and the 707? Also what are the thoughts on the Olympus c-5050? Some of the photo magazines are saying that the Olympus is the best bang for buck now. I am pretty new to photography and looking for something that I can use on the tank but also work well for vacations and everyday use as well. I was about to purchase the 717 but wanted to get some feedback from someone that owns one of these camera and see what people who know say.

Bottom line is, if you want a camera that you can manually adjust everything, dont get an olympus, chances are it wont have the white-balance controls that a nikon would.

You should do more research before making comments like that. You apparently haven't looked at the Olympus C5050.

The C5050 has more manual adjustment capability than any comparable Nikon.
Since you brought up white balance, the C5050 has:

Auto

All manual settings that follow can be individually color adjusted:

Outdoor preset sun
Outdoor preset shade
Outdoor preset cloud
Outdoor preset sunset
Indoor preset incandescent (3000K)
Indoor preset fluorescent (6700K)
Indoor preset fluorescent (5000K)
Indoor preset fluorescent (4200K)
Indoor preset fluorescent (3500K

4 separate stored custom white balance settings (saved from white card or preset, each color adjustable)

One-Touch (white card setting).

Although the 5050 has an extra megapixel over the 4500, the 5050, along with the minolta 7 series, has a crappy macro range. I really blows. It is 20cm, 10 times the nikon's.

You should do more research before making comments like that. You apparently haven't looked at the Olympus C5050.

The C5050 can take macros as close as 3 cm. (1.2"). This is via the Super Macro mode.

:D

I've had my C5050 since November. For me, it was the best camera then & still is, if you don't need super long zoom (with 5 MegaPixels, I just crop to get close in when needed).
