I bought a used coolpix several months back and it used to work fine on a USB connection on my old system (98SE). I recently rebuilt my system and got a legal copy of XP installed. In no way, shape or form can I seem to get the 990 to be recognized in windows. I tried driver upgrades, updated bios on my mobo, upgraded USB drivers - even tried camera on a machine at work (2000 box) with same results.

After doing some reading apparently other people have had issues with this camera in particular under XP. Rather than going and buying a new cable (I don't think that's the issue) could I just get a USB card reader and pull my images in that way? Will I have to use the Nikon software or will windows just be able to read directly off the card?

Any insight on this is most appreciated.

If you get a regular generic card reader, it will have drivers of its own.
Should read your card no matter what camera it came from.

Have you tried the "microsoft camera wizzard?" plug your camera into the pc and start it. It should find it. If not, go for the reader. they're cheap ($10)

The reader will show up as a removable drive and you can open the pics from there. (your default editing program will automatically open when you doubleclick on one.) Or you could right click and select "open with >"
and pick the program.

Good idea then Bingo - I am the proverbial computer whiz and not being able to get this camera to work on XP is making me nuts - I was even contemplating writing all the entries into the registry myself to get it to take the hardware - too much damn trouble.

I'll brave the hordes of holiday geeks at Frys tomorrow and pick up a card reader.

Yep, I don't think I've ever used the USB connection for my 990. Card reader is so cheap, easy ... reads as another drive.

Plus I can just right-click from Windows Explorer and send to `my pictures'. Works great, and at picture 13,750+ :D
