Comment: Part 3 from the “beautiful flatworm series”. I am willing to sell these lovely creatures to the proper buyer. Provide information about your aquarium so I can make sure they have a proper home.

Hey, Tom.

How large is the image of this flatworm before resizing and such?
I think I told you about this setup and I'm curious how it works in comparison to using the reversed 20mm. What do you think your magnification ratio is?
This one is pretty impressive, especially since you can use it in autofocus mode.

Regards.

Hello Mike:
Whether it is worth doing is questionable. With the Nikor 105mm micro lens I can use the full resolution of the D100 camera. Adding the reversed lens makes the image larger but somewhat blurry—particularly shooting through aquarium glass. I will post a more complete analysis on the photo techniques forum within about a week. I have also posted another picture in this forum about 2 or three weeks ago.

I split this off into a new thread so we could continue this discussion. Fascinating, methinks! :D

Hello Mike. I looked at the original image. This image covers about a quarter of the original image (long axis--original 3008 pixels, cropped to 1500, resized to 640, sharpened). It was not sharp enough to crop farther. I just tested this lens combo and posted the results in the photo techniques and equipment section. It is better than I thought. It is still an unwieldy monster however.

You suggested this combination could be used in the autofocus mode. I never tried it. It was so heavy I was afraid it would damage the autofocus mechanism. Also, because my tripod is wimpy, I need to use the self timer to keep the setup from vibrating. I hate using autofocus with a self timer.

Take a look at the article by Plonsky. Because of the better DOF in prosumer digital cameras this may be a better way to go.

Mike you know a lot about reversed lenses, where did you get your info?
