March Photo Contest:: WAR!!!

Welcome to Reefs.org's March Photo Contest: WAR!
Here's a contest to really test your photographic timing. We're looking for photos that show some sort of aggressive display, be it a fish flaring its fins in a territorial dispute or a coral with stinging sweepers on the prowl.

This submission period ends on 12:00 AM EST Monday (Sunday/Monday midnight) March 29, 2004.


Prize
First place wins a $25 gift certificate, generously donated by Reefs.org's sponsor Marine Depot.


Please refer to the Contest Rules for more information about how to enter. Each member may submit up to 2 entries per contest. PLEASE remember not to put borders around your photos. Your photos will NOT be considered for the finalists if they have borders of any sort. You may put copyright notification on the photo itself, but please keep it small and unobtrusive.

Please submit your entry in this thread only. Photos not submitted to this thread will not be considered for the photo contest. Photos that have no relevance to this contest will be removed. General comments or posts without a photo attached will also be deleted from this thread. If you'd like to discuss the contest, please start another thread.

Comments: In the right corner we have Hydnophora rigida weighing a wopping 1.3 ounces! In the left corner, we have a vicious Montipora capricornis who was shading out the Acroporids! It's a close match, but wait! The hydnophora has spit out its inards over the M. capricornis! The polyps are dying out as the hydnophora releases chemicals over the montipora capricornis polyps! It looks like a grim defeat for our Montipora.

Comments: The shutter was pressed a fraction of a second after I realized I was in trouble. The Nikonos is a manual focus camera which makes it difficult to get good pictures of fish. Here I thought I had a subject that would pose for me. I focused, hoping to get within 3 feet. I composed as I slowly swam toward the fish. Suddenly he accelerated and rammed me in the shoulder. It was quite a whack for a 2 foot fish. After telling people about the incident I realized I was lucky to get away with only a hole in my wet suit. I heard lots of stories about their aggressive nature: divers with masks broken, holes in their fins, and actual bites.
