My 10 year old son wants a camera for Christmas. I recently let him shoot pics using my coolpix 995 at a birthday party. He loved it! :D

What do you guys recommend as a good started camera for a kid?

I prefer digital, with film processing cost considered.

Is he a responsible kid? If so, get him a nice low-end digital. I started using my dad's Pentax 1000 when I was that age. Having a real camera really kept my interest in photography. If I had a stupid-little-point-and-shoot, I probably wouldn't be as interested as I am today.

If you think he's gonna lose the camera, or just all around trash it, get him a little $50 cheapo digital. Also, check out used camera shops, you may be able to get a decent 1.0 megapixel for under $100. Then wait and see if it's a flash in the pan or if he's really gonna stick with it. Then buy him a real camera for his birthday. (or just give him yours and buy yourself a new one!)

something I thought about is memory cards. you might want to think about getting him a camera which takes the same type memory card as yours. . .

Good point Bingo. I have a 256K flash card ion my camera and an extra 192 that I never use.

I'll look into that. Thanks for the suggestions.

I decided on the Coolpix 2100 for a few reason. Number 1: Nikon. Number 2. I wanted him to have a camera that uses compact flash so that he can print his pics using the new HP 7960 that I just got, and I wanted him to be able to use some of my cards too.

He loves the new camera and says it is his favorite gift. He shot alot of pics and 15 second movies yesterday. :D

A new shutter bug is born.
