I'm about to get in the market for a flash unit for my Canon 300D, but I know zilch about flashes. I mean, I know the difference between a ring flash and a regular one, but other than that, what do I need to look for? Can a decent flash be had for under a couple hundred bucks? Are flashes camera- or platform-specific?

Sharkky, I have the cannon 430 I use with my Elan. IT does A-TTL metering, auto zoom, and flash compinsation. I bought it used from b&h for $150. What a great flash, I'm really happy with it.

I don't know if the non-cannon will do A-TTL, but you might or might not use it anyhow. check the used section of b&h.

How's that flash I sent you working? Did you ever get the stuff to make it work?

Thanks for the replies, folks. I never thought to check used sections of the big sites. Good call.

B., I haven't found the right cabling and such for it yet. I've got a couple ppl at Roberts Camera on the search for it. Their 'flash-guy' was quite intrigued by it. He'd never seen one. LOL His fear is that unless I find the perfect connectors and stuff for it, it might somehow backlash or something and fry the camera when I use it. 8O So we're still looking. Currently it's making a smashing conversation piece on the bookshelf in my den. :D
