After about 3 years of begging, proding, and annoying just about every wholesaler, jobber, and importer that had a telephone the search is finally over! They arrived today without incident and just hit the quarantine tank. By a stroke of luck I landed both a male and a female (well, it's likely a female, or simply a juvenile) which is even more difficult to come by. I'm absolutely thrilled and thought i'd share some crappy pictures. I'll work on better ones later, I still suck at operating the new camera.

I know Len will appreciate them, he's been searching for these guys much longer than me!

Yuck, saving as a .gif to make it small enough to post really did a job on the pic, oh well.

You bastard!!!!! ;)

Rhomboids rule. I wonder how many people realize how rare this sight is. If you're looking now, please realize you're looking at fish you will likely never see in your lifetime unless you go searching for it :P

My goodness...simply awesome. I would probably take out an insurance policy for those guys ;). So...the question I'm sure everyone wants to know: how much?! (you can pm me if you don't want to share) :). Congrats and enjoy! And, MORE PICS!

Thanks chip :P

Len, between school, wetweb, working at the fish shop, and now my summer internship I don't get on the forums much anymore, although I'd really like to and will likely start making time to!

NKT, lets just say that they would have retailed for less than Marine Center's price of $600 each (not they can even get them anymore). They're so worth every dollar of this 20 y/o's money though, and I'd pay Marine Center's price in a heartbeat if they had ever gotten them. I don't know why, but i think there's some sort of psychological thing around these fish...

Going to work on some better pictures tomorrow, waiting for that Scott Michael pose! If you've got Scott Michaels Reef Fishes Volume 1, check out page 38, the male I have is identical.

Okay, it's the day after seeing this wonderful sight, and I still have to say...

You suck for getting these fish.

Yes, you still suck.

:P

Peace,

Chip

Those are some snazzy fish. I can certainly understand having an almost obsessive drive to keep a certain fish. For me it's the harlequin tusk. Mine's spendy and usually in 3 digits, but at least it's closer to $100 than $1000. ;)

Much better shot today of the male. The female is pretty reclusive, but they seem to get along well. Not to mention they both eat like pigs.

Didn't garf this pic, but it looks like I did on the eye. I changed the white balance to flourescent lighting, so I suppose that did it.

OK, you can curse and spit at me for raining on your wedding, but for God's sake, I cannot understand all this excitement.

To begin with, if this fish is so rare, is it wise/responsible/normal/common sense to take it from the ocean?

There are SO MANY other beautiful fish in the ocean that are not that rare. The only thing that makes this fish really special is that is rare. It's like a Picaso.

For one, if I would be so sick to want one, if I would get one, I'd just hide in a corner and enjoy it, without bragging.
But I guess that this come with the sickness.

Sorry, I refrained myself first time I saw the post, but today I couldn't anymore...

It's rare because they aren't collected frequently, not because these were the last 2 in the ocean. If you don't like to hear about peoples fish and tanks, please close the reefs.org window. :D
