Recent Florida Aquarium shots.

Hey folks. Thought I would share some recent shots taken at the local aquariums. (Mote Marine Labs, Sarasota & Florida Aquarium, Tampa). These were all taken hand held at ISO 1600 at 1/125 f/2.5ish. As usual....the lighting was horrible and the crowds of tourists this time of year were even worse. Tripod use was a NO GO.

while I have your attention...I would also like to introduce you to a new photography/camera site directed towards Canon shooters. (Nikonians are welcome too...just check the funky blues at the door). :wink: It's still early and the site could use a few good Canonites/shooters.

Hi jlneng. The glass wasn't very clean. Many finger prints etc. Too many kids running lose in the aquarium this time of year. Spring break snow birds flocking EVERYWHERE. :lol:

Having a hard time finding the dragons amongst the leaves. :lol: I've got to find them and post process them. then I'll get them up.

Very nice shots. I am curious how you kept them from being blurry. I use a sony 828 and in lower light conditions, like inside an aquarium, the shot takes a split second longer, but obviously with my hand shake and the subject moving it makes for a blurry picture.

The only way around it is to use a flash.

How did I keep them from being blurry? Put on my glasses and paid them fish to hold still and pose for the photog. 8O :wink:

I shot these pics at ISO 1600 at 1/125 at around f/2.5-4.0. Despite using a DSLR....you can obtain these same results with an inexpensive point and shoot camera. Most of my early shots were with a Canon G2...and I"ve taken some with an under $150 digital P&S. The key is steady panning...using as high a shutter speed as possible..combined with high ISO (although introduces grain/noise)...and adjust the aperture accordingly. Hold the camera steady and shoulders in to your body. Pan at the waist. You can also improve your shots by using a tripod and shutter/cable release when possible. All these shots were hand held..as use of a tripod was nearly impossible with the crowds of snow birds at the public aquarium.

Yeah I can certainly put the ISO higher but then comes lots of noise. What program do you use to reduce that after the fact? I've tried shooting in raw too. But since I'm not much of a photoshopper I really don't know what tools to use or how to get silly on pictures.

I shoot in RAW....always. I convert to Jpeg in eitherr Canon's software..or photoshop CS2 (depending on the moon) :-D I often times don't need noise reduction..but when I apply..it's just what's in PSCS2. I do have a program called "Neat Image" (pretty much the same as Noise Ninja) that I'll use if something is really full of noise. The Canon sensors on their DSLR's is pretty darn good at high ISO for noise.
