Hi All

So I thought I would share a few shots that I took yesterday evening with my new Nikkor 60mm Micro lens. If you are interested check out the lens here:

These pictures were taken using the onboard flash (Nikon D200) in combination with a wireless external flash speedlight SB-600. The nice thing about the Nikon D200 is that it comes with the CLS (creative lighting system) and you do not need any extra equipment to setup and use a speedlight flash remotely. However, in my opinion it is a drawback that you have to use the onboard flash, which controls the speedlight as a slave. I still can’t believe how sharp this lens is. I have never owned a macro (Nikon calls it Micro) lens before. When I look at these pictures I think “I couldn’t possible have taken these shotsâ€

If you want to control a Nikon SpeedLight (flash) off camera, wirelessly without the cameras built-in flash going off, you need a SU-800 Wireless Speedlight Commander.
They are almost as expensive as a flash unit.

Thanks for all the nice comments. Also, thank you to Chris – because if it wasn’t for your great info it would probably have taken me years to produce images like these – not a few weeks!!. Also thank for the info on the wireless speed light commander. That would be really useful because the built-in flash can be a nuisance. Do you have any experience with these cheaper units from Ebay?:

Do they do the same job?

I don't know anything about the cheaper units you are looking at. I did buy a cheap ring flash once (i think it was Phoenix). It was terrible.

Oh, I guess I should have also mentioned... In most situations in aquarium photography, your camera isn't that far away from your flash so you don't really need 'wireless' control of your off-camera flash.

You can use a wire. A dedicated sync cord will allow you to have full control over your flash without spending the $$ on a wireless transmitter.

This one will work for you...

Thanks for all the great info Chris. So if you are using the sync cord do you still have to use the onboard flash to trigger the secondary flash? Or do you have both options? $100 for a cord seems pretty steep - but I guess you pay for quality (and Ashton Kutcher for the Nikon commercials!! :).
