cleaning camera

i see a tiny speck when i look thru the view finder, but it doesnt seem to be from my lens cause when i switch to another lens, the speck is still there. is that a safe assumption?
if so, i assume it is on the viewfinder, or r there other possibilties?

Yes, it is not on your lens if it doesn't go away after changing lenses.

Have you try cleaning your viewfinder (eye piece)? next place to check is the mirror you see once the lens is removed.

The sensor dirt only shows up on actual pictures, you won't see those thru the view finder.

I would guess it is on the mirror.

it doesnt show up on the pics. i tried cleaning the viewfinder with a q-tip. i may have to clean it better some cleaning fluid.

It could be on the mirror or focusing screen. The D40 also has a pentamirror as opposed to a pentaprism. You can also get dust in there as well. Dust on your sensor is a bigger problem. I wouldn't worry about it unless it really bothers you. You may have to take it to a nikon tech to get it out.
